First of all I apologize, because I do not write good English-speaking being an Italian.

I have a hard-disk WD6401AALS 00J7B1, bought in 2010/04, still garantia. This put the hard drive as second hard disk with an identical inside a PC i920 that I am using it only for video editing.

This is not hard on operating systems, and a hard disk for data only.
About a harvest ago, when loaded has 80%, and tries to make the defragmentation, the whole PC went haywire, and this hard drive completely disappeared from the My Computer.
To unblock the situation, or empty up to 60% on hard disk, and that point I could use it normally.

After three weeks of the (about 5 days ago) started to give me problems, in the sense that the defragmentation Upon your trying to get them I wanted the PC into a tailspin, and the hard drive disappeared from My Computer. At this point, or made up the entire hard disk and completely emptied.

I have done extensive testing with a Western Digital Life Guard and it is all right.

To exercise more secure software downloaded your Hard Disk Low Level Format Tool to test it with this. Upon your open the Hard Disk Low Level Format Tool, and I'm going on this hard drive from the Device Detail window this message: Details are unavailable: ,,Internal error. Please post this problem on http://forum.hddguru.com''
If I go instead where I have another hard on those in the operating system (XP), it gives me a normal window with Device Detail.
This means that the Hard Disk Low Level Format Tool works fine on my PC.

I went to the Hard Disk Low Level Format Tool eo fact LOW LEVEL FORMAT PROCESS hard for this that gave me problems.
After LOW LEVEL FORMAT PROCESS or done for this hard I went back on the window of the Device Detail and / or the same message as before:,,Internal error. Please post this problem on http://forum.hddguru.com''

At this point, I subscribed to your forum and I kindly ask you to help me understand what I do in this situation: the hard disk and replace?
I have to give the RMA and send it to Western Digital?
What meaning to that message: ,,Internal error'' ?
Now I have partitioned the hard disk to NTFS norlalmente and training, works well and can defragment even though only 10% of stuff on it.
What should I do? Help me!

Many thanks to all who have had the patience to read everything and help me!

Hello.

My advise is to simply send it to WD for warranty.

I cannot say what the problem is with the hd, though, but I would just have a new one. They are quite inexpensive nowadays.

Good luck, Juan.

Use Data LifeGuard to zero-fill your drive. That will do the same as a low level format. Hopefully this will force any problematic sectors to be reallocated.

You could also use MHDD to identify "slow" sectors, ie those that require several retries:

My arse. If the drive is unstable it can potentially kill it.

The drive is 7 months old and covered by warranty. The OP's data are of no importance. If the drive is "unstable", then why would anyone want to keep using it if they have the option of replacing it?

Then why you bother to give advice instead of suggesting to RMA it straight away ?

I know the whole story of the OP's drive, and moreover in case of RMA, most likely he will get a refurbished drive that only Heaven knows where it was before, adding problems to problems.

There are better ways to fix these problems , but (un)luckily are not at reach of everyone. If DLD was so "resolutive" why did WD give it away for free when the REAL WORKING procedures are "secured" and average joe can't use or even understand them ? Because life is life and Darwin was right

I wouldn't trust refurbished drives, even the ones that you do (how do you sleep at night?). :P

That said, if the drive in your hand is known to be unreliable, then it stands to reason that you would want to thoroughly exercise it to shake out all the bad sectors, if that is indeed the problem. If it fails, then consider yourself lucky that you didn't entrust your data to it.

BTW, there is nothing you or WD can do to magically revive a bad sector or a bad head.

Refurbished drives are on the shelves and maybe on your computer, the fact they didn't tell you and you don't know how to tell it doesn't matter.
Refurbished drives (NOT MHDD'D or shot with the free tools) DO WORK and can be used. People who ask for a refurb drive of course know that it has been recertified and it's not new. Exactly like people who go to car demolition and buy gearbox or engine . They have their ass on the car with non-new gearbox or engine , so what ?
Many car manufacturers offer quality recertified (rebuilt) spare parts at 50% off than new and same 2-year warranty. So what ?

Very well , usually after a lot of fun :P

Life and real world is not limited to MHDD , HDDregen or the bullshit free tools the manufacturers give for free..

This is what only YOU think, un/fortunately. (only in case of head crash the platter /drive should be rejected)

Hello !
For now I put this way: the hard disk the shaping done at a low level with LLF, or created only in the partition using NTFS and Lost Abasto well, but continues to give me the LLF,, internall errors.''
I want to tell you that I still have three hard disks of the same cut Guaranteed equal and with the same ususra, and none of them does not give me in LLF,, internal errors.''Why?
Sa qualquno smnificato that has, internal''errors?
Thanks to everyone that I meet and make gentileza.
