I'm trying to help a friend fix his hdd. The usb port became loose to where he had to hold it in a certain position for it to work, well it eventually broke completely off. I've soldered it back on but its not being recognized. The power light comes on but it stays solid and doesn't blink as if there isn't any activity, or does the power button do anything. I've checked the diodes and examined thethe pcb and and everything seems to be okay, no obvious signs of damage. I ordered a new sata/USB Bridge, and I'm wondering if there are any firmware chips to be transferred on the bridge as I know there is on the main pcb logic board?

I dont have a desktop computer(only laptop), sata cable, or hdd dock station. So I can't test the drive by bypassing the bridge board

No I can't read the u2 chips markings, I was thinking it was a rom chip though aswell, was hoping someone just knew. I don't have a sata/usb adapter and no the the HD doesn't spin when connected to the bridge, I figured the computer would have to recognize it for it to spin up. I have purchased a bridge board the the same p/n but the revision is off a couple letters, couldn't find an exact match. Like you said, I'll have to try it out when I get it, sometime this week.

Say I was to order a sata/usb adapter, How do I know what size sata eg. 2.5 etc. the hdd has?

Have you used a new connector, or resoldered the old one ? Sometimes it is necessary to use a new connector.

Cut an old usb cable, strip the wire tips, and test continuity to the marked points ( and GND and VCC also ) .

Also, I don´t know about your particular board, but many boards needs to "see" a data connection to a computer ( on those two wires in the middle ) to make the hdd start spinning.

Are +12V and +5V both present at the SATA power connector?

http://pinouts.ru/Power/sata-power_pinout.shtml

In other bridge PCB designs there would be a dual MOSFET switch at U5. The OP's PCB appears to bypass these 12V/5V power switches with resistors R46 and R47. R46 looks a little "cloudy".

When checking for continuity of a resistor, does a beep sound mean bad or good? No beep on R46, beep on R47.

I checked SATA for voltage and came back reading 10V for the 12V area and 5V for the 5V area on the SATA connector.

Well i messed up and ripped one of the copper pads off the pcb bridge where the usb connector goes, but while doing so i found something interesting. i was testing for continuity where @rogfanther had mentioned and it connected to the computer for the first time for a short second then and it said that windows couldnt recognize it. That leads me to believe that the pcb bridge is bad, well definitley is bad now lol... Good thing i have a replacement on the way, just need to figure out if i need to transfer any rom chips.

I kind of got a better picture of the markings on the U2 chip if anyone can make out what it means

You appear to have bigger problems than just the bridge PCB.

The absence of +12V at the SATA connector would suggest that there was an overvoltage, possibly from the wrong AC adapter (eg a 19V laptop adapter). This would explain why R46 is open circuit (ie bad). You now need to check TVS diode D4 and resistor R64 on the HDD PCB.

TVS FAQ :
http://www.hddoracle.com/viewtopic.php?f=100&t=86

U2 is a serial flash memory.

R46 had no beep, meaning that it's a closed circuit right? R47 had the open circuit. And I check R64 and R67 on the hdd PCB and they are both open circuit. Diode 3 and 4 are both closed circuit.

U2 being serial flash memory, do I have to transfer it?

Beep -> closed circuit
No beep -> open circuit

Instead of using the diode range of your meter, use the 200 ohms range, as detailed in my FAQ.

@shambosley , If your friend told you the whole history, your only problem initially was one of bad soldering or defective/worn usb connector. Dpending on the ripped trace, if you take bhe board to someone specialized in this kind of repair it may still be saved, and maybe easier/cheaper.

If there were some facts not told in the first post ( like fzakbar suggest, the use of a notebook power adapter of 19V ) , then things can be worse. maybe you can find some member of this forum near you that could give it a look.

Well the least I can do is replace the sata/usb bridge controller(already on the way), and possibly the hdd pcb right? If that doesn't work, he can take it to a proffesional. Those are the only 2 physical parts as far as I know. I'll try the new sata bridge when it gets here and let you guys know where I stand. I'm almost positive he didn't use the wrong charger.

@Shambosley, the fix for the HDD PCB may be as simple as removing the shorted diode(s), as explained in my FAQ. Could you please retake your resistance measurements on the 200 ohms range?

R46- 1(no reading)
R47-0.3ohms
R64-0.3ohms D4-158
R67-0.3ohms D3-149.5ohms

Although the resistances seem low, there is no shorted diode on the HDD PCB, so it is probably OK.

You can flow a blob of solder over R46. That should restore its function (as a zero-ohm resistor?). You would need to determine if the damage around the USB connector is repairable, though.

The usb connector is damaged beyond repair for me so it would be pointless to assert any more attention towards this Sata bridge, but I do have a replacement coming in the mail, will be here in a couple days. I'll let you know when I get it. As you can tell I know nothing about this stuff but I do like to learn and I am beyond grateful for the help provided thus far. I appreciate you guys sticking with me!

Ok, lets hope the new bridge is the same and works ok.

My thoughts exactly, I couldnt find one with the same exact revision, but only a couple revisions off. Im hoping nothing major was revised...

While researching during my wait for the replacement Sata bridge to get here I stumbled across this peice of information(see attached image)

If this is the case, would I be required to transfer this IC chip and/or any others, of course I'm gonna try the new bridge as is first. Just trying to be prepared
