I have a Toshiba MQ01ABD075 (750GB) with a bad head. I succesfully imaged 65% of lba's and now am looking for a donor drive. So the question is, is it MQ01ABD100 with one head depopulated? In other words, should I look for a 1TB donor?

1Tb should be good, underlying issues excepted.

I may be able to confirm the head map from a CP or ROM dump. I could also determine the bad head from an analysis of the Glist (I have written a tool for this purpose).

Maybe yes, but if the aim is Data Recovery then it would be a lot simpler to use a 1Tb donor.

In fact a lot of 750Gb drives we’ve come across have all 4 heads physically installed with one switched off, typically H3 or occasionally H0.

I agree coz most of the sellers on E-bay and similiar sites don't provide any information about head maps etc. But it would still be nice to know which head is acting up.

I attempted to analyse the CPs in earlier models here:

Analysis of Toshiba CPs:
http://www.hddoracle.com/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=2044

There are some similarities, but a lot of differences. I confess that I don't understand the actual meanings of the various CPs, but one can easily discern the head/media related data,

For example, CP 0x00AA ("TO") consists of 6 groups. There appear to be 3 populated and 3 unpopulated heads. The data for the unpopulated heads (3,4,5) look like templates. I don't know whether heads 0, 1 and 2 are logical or physical heads.

Code:

Another head related CP?

BB_1_SH.bin

Code:

00000010  00 00 00 00 80 80 80 80 80 80 00 00 00 00 00 5B
                      h0 h1 h2 h3 h4 h5 ?

BTW, the Glist is a separate module in the SA, not in the ROM.

Here are the same CPs from a 2-head model (MQ01ABD050V):

Code:
Offset(h) 00 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 0A 0B 0C 0D 0E 0F

0007B0E0  53 48 8C B1 D0 D0 D0 D0 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00  SH..............
                h0 h1 h2 h3 h4 h5

0007B0F0  00 00 00 00 80 80 80 80 80 80 00 00 00 00 00 26

Code:
Offset(h) 00 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 0A 0B 0C 0D 0E 0F

0007EAB0  48 4C 02 03 00 00 00 00 01 01 00 00 00 00 00 00  HL..............
                ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ -----------------------
       logical/physical head map

0007EAC0  00 00 00 00 02 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 07
          ----------- ^^ 2 heads

It would appear that logical heads 0 and 1 correspond to physical heads 2 and 3.

Therefore it would appear that your MQ01ABD075 drive has 4 physical heads, and that the logical-to-physical mapping is 1-to-1. However, other CPs suggest that logical/physical head #3 has been switched off.

Code:
Offset(h) 00 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 0A 0B 0C 0D 0E 0F

00000000  48 4C 00 01 02 03 00 00 01 01 02 02 00 00 00 00  HL..............

Thank you, Fzabkar, very much, for your explanations. Yes MQ01ABD075 does have 4 phisycal heads. Mapfile log looks like one head was switched off during factory selftest and one of three logical heads is being weak.

Do you have a dump of your Glist?

somethings to try

try increasing the read timeout
Read via PIO mode (use hardware retries)
Read via utility by generating virtual compiler.
