hi i was stuck with the same problem which i solve on a WDC2500bevt
just a quick list of master pwd i found on my travels

WDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCW <----THIS ONE WORKED FOR ME
WDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWD
&'()*.WDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWD
h2oinsyde <-----for acer drive(but not mine)

if none of the above work then the fun begins
first download MHDD boot disk (google for it)
copy the unzipped files i put up on to a usb stick and plug in
remove all drives except locked one
boot the cd and press F5 (safe mode)
type 'c:' to get to the contents of usb drive
then type MHDD to run the program on the usb not the cd as that is wrong version
in MHDD (select drive this might take a little bit of getting use to!)
run the script by typing ".dump" or ".dump2" (two different scripts)
the script will run and return "DONE"
read the 22.bin file if DUMP script run ok with a hex editor
and 42.bin if DUMP2 script run ok with a hex editor
also read all other posts for more info
hope this helps
and a great big thanks too all who posted and helped me save 8 months worth of HNC elec engineering work thanks!
Nirvanowiec, a big xtra thanx for the script i used....

So I'm trying to follow I've created a magic boot disk v2 and
unzipped everything you have on your MHDD.zip to the USB thumb drive and plugged it in
I remove all drives except locked one
I booted the cd and pressed F5 (safe mode)
I typed type 'c:' to get to the contents of usb drive
but it gives me invalid drive specification. I've tried all the drive letters as well.

I don't understand why anyone wants to be able to crack their own external drive. Sorry if you lose it but I don't want anyone to be able to crack the data on mine, WD, or the government. What is the purpose of encryption if it can be cracked. Either use it without the encryption or don't bother.

If it isn't secure I would use something else.

@Focal,

FYI, ATA passwords for WD disks (the subject of this thread) and on-disk encryption are totally different things. Setting an ATA password on its own, does not encrypt the data on the disk.

Well ,
Remember i tell you sometimes you do not read ,he said without loosing data .your website will erase it

"While unlocking, HDD Unlock Wizard will erase and re-certify the drive.
If you need unlocking which is safe to your data, please use A-FF Repair Station"

So he has to use A-FF Repair station or find a Dr guy with the right tools

I've been reading this thread for two days now, and I THINK I've followed the instructions. Not a complete n00b, not by a long shot, but I must say I am impressed by the knowledge and experience some of you folks have. I'm a self-taught geek, and I pride myself in being able to find the solutions I need. But yes, I do need a hand with this one. I hope I've given enough information here, including the 22.bin file snip. Thanks SO much for any help!!

Chris

Yes, and several derivations of it, ending in a W, a D, and a C.

Hello again. New to this forum, and to hardware manipulation in general. I made a post yesterday with a .bin snip, and another with the .bin file itself. Overnight I received a PM from an apparent regular to this board, so I am taking that advice in this subsequent post.

The drive I'm trying to unlock does not belong to me. It is a co-worker's drive, who had been having some blue screen issues with his Vista installation. Instead of seeking help right away, he tried to fix it himself (I'm sure we've all been there..). In the process he was poking around in the BIOS of his Dell, and proceeded to password both the BIOS and the hard drive. He's not too concerned about the laptop, but he needs some data from the drive itself, namely his 2009 taxes. He said that if he cannot get this information, the IRS is going to try and nail him for $53,000 in back taxes.
That's the background. Now to the present. After realizing that the most likely and safest way to bypass the BIOS password would entail replacing the motherboard, I decided I'd take the drive out and connect it as an external to my desktop. A hundred hours of scanning with ZAR produced nothing. I then removed the HDD from my laptop, and set his in its place. It was then that I realized the HDD itself was passworded as well. After three tries it locks the drive out.. Does this prevent MHDD from seeing it correctly? That lead me to this forum and this thread. It would appear that all the information I need is somewhere in the first four pages or so, and I have tried like everything to follow the instructions, but something is still eluding me. Here again is the .bin snip. I hope I've given enough information, and any and all help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!!

Chris

So if your co-worker has password protected both bios and hdd, why won't he unlock them? Just connect the hdd back to the machine in question, enter BIOS and have him enter the passwords.

He says he's forgotten them. I grilled him today and he gave me a few to try, to no avail. Said he was drunk when he did it.
