Hi, folks. What a wealth of information here!

I have a WD600BB with a PCB that my power supply used for a circuit breaker (fried U1 chip). It's a model WD600BB-75CAA0. I've found a donor drive with the same number PCB (2060- 001092-007) BUT a model WD600BB-75CAA1. I swapped the PCB's and connected it to the PC - not much luck. R-Studio thinks it's a 7.9GB drive. I then swapped the good PCB "live" from the good drive to the bad one. R-Studio now sees it as a 60GB drive and appears to be able to see files on it but I'm getting tons of two errors one of which is "the drive cannot find the sector requested" and the other is "cyclic redundancy check".

My question, before I go and try and find a soldering wizard is,...I've read in other posts that a swap of the U2 SMD may be required. Are the errors I'm seeing consistent with that or do I have a different problem? Different software than R-Studio?

Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like the soldering wizard is the correct quest to embark upon!

Will need to swap eeprom; someone may be able to give you a chip #, unfortunately i do not know the chip # off the top of my head, if you can post a high res SS of the PCB then I can identify it for you

Or google the part numbers of things on the PCB that look like 8-pin eeproms until you find the right one.

OK, I've got my hi-res photo. I've also been googling other people's experiences and part numbers as suggested and have this info. Another user had a similar problem as mine with a WD1200 drive (blown motor chip) and also had to swap the firmware. He ointed to the 8 pin chip that looks similar to mine (but in a different location that's above the large WDC chip and a bit to the right. This chip is labeled ST755. I googled this part number but all I could come up with is an "adjustable inverting DC-DC regulator". I also found that the chip in the upper left is flash memory. Any help?

Pic link not working for me either but I think you'll be fine with a ROM swap. Doesn't sound like anything inside has been damaged.

The "ST" chip at U4 is theone u need to swap.

Maybe I'm looking at this wrong but I think that you have to swap the 8-legged SOIC at U8 not the Winbond at U4.

No, the ROM is in the M29F102BB at top left. I think Sean just had the wrong U number- it is U2, not U4.
