I used MHDD to unlock my 20GB WDC hard drive using the master password, XBOXSCENE, then I use the command DISPWD to remove the password permantly. It seemed to work until I rebooted. Now the hard drive is locked, and the original master password does not work. I have tried WDCWDC.....up to 32 characters, TEAMASSEMBLY, what am I doing wrong? Is it locked again, is there a usual password MHDD locks with?

In case this helps someone else, I had the same problem and figured out how to unlock the drive. See here: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=8374&p=253488#p253488

If you don't have proper firmware tools, Vendor Specific Commands and/or you don't know what you are doing or you are not sure about the procedures that you are using on the specific drive just use a RE-LOCK "trick".

In other words as soon as you get the drive unlocked just RE-LOCK it with a KNOWN USER password and set a KNOWN MASTER password as well using something like Victoria for windows or even MHDD.

If later on you re-power the drive and by some dark force it becames lock then you at least will know the password..... Same if for some reason the drive decides to set itself as password locked without changing the passwords that you set (just setting the lock flag).

In sum as soon as you get rid of your "unknown" ATA password by whatever means (ZU, Script, Firmware Tool, "Chineseware", etc) you just set a new user password locking the drive and then you unlock it and remove the password using the new known password.

:D :D :D

If you fully understand what you are doing on your specific drive like for example if you know the ATA Vendor Specific Commands to retrieve the configuration module on that old WDC MCU based drive then even if the drive ends up locked again you can simply check the password that was set, change the "flag" or even replace the entire module with the unlocked one .... If you can't do that just re-lock and remove the password to be on the safe side.
