I have a 400GB Seagate drive that I use as a backup drive. Long story short, I set it resting inside the case, and when I plugged it in, I shorted one of the components on the PCB board.

My questions are these:
1. Can the fried component be removed and the drive used anyway? (probably not, but worth a shot)
2. Can the fried component be replaced, if so, what exactly is it?
3. I believe the board can be replaced, with a board with the same processor & revision #. Is this correct?
3.5. If the above is correct will this replacement board do the trick? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160724089199

ANY input would be Greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Marvin J

You need to find a board # 100406533 and swap over the rom chip.

Ah yes, I forget this one these days.

"Assuming it is a pcb fault only, no other damage in drive and you understand and accept the risks of DIY".

If you mess this up, recovery can be impossible or very expensive. If you are not sure about what you're doing, consult a pro.

Otherwise, and if you understand risks etc, read my suggestion above.

If necessary, some board suppliers include a "ROM" or "firmware" transfer for US$10:

In your case there is an Atmel 25F512AN serial flash memory chip at the top right corner of the PCB.

That said, the "unusual burn" appears to be in the vicinity of the preamp connector and could be part of the preamp's negative supply. I can't tell for certain, but the burnt component may be a current or voltage sensing resistor, in which case one would have to be concerned for the survival of the preamp.
