HDD shutting down when accessing particular sectors

April 7th, 2009, 4:01

Hello,

I have a bit of a peculiar problem. My hard drive seems to have been partially damaged by a power outage.

There seem to be some bad sectors now; simple to repair normally, but whenever I access them the drive shuts down (at least in Linux) and I have to turn off the power and back on again to make it answer bus requests again.

I have ran a long SMART self-test which doesn't seem to have made it shut down, though (I haven't verified this with all rigor yet).

This makes it quite difficult to detect the problematic sectors and get the data off the drive.

Any advice (tools, techniques, anything) coming to your mind?

Leslie

test surface with MHDD.

Depending on results, clone disk or ask pro for help.

I remembered encountering something similar before. Is this a Seagate disk ?

Hi
Yes! I have a similar problem with my Seagate HDD. I happened suddenly! When I turned my pc on, Win XP took a long time to load and chkdsk reported a large list of errors.
Now I can see my files on my lost partitions but when I want to access and recover them system loses HDD till a power cycle!
I will appreciate any idea!

You need some special tools to either do a hardware reset or/and power cycle to copy out the data. It will be simple if you have PC3000 DE or others. I think there are some way to do this in terminal mode but had not try that before because other tools always work.

If you fix the problem - if Fw related - imaging will work. If have head problem, either fix it or check displacement / image by head. Don't see other option...

My experience with such seagate disk related problems was, swap head seldom helps (in fact, I could not remember any success so far). FW seems good. Just "stuck" on accessing some sectors but nearly 100% all could be copy upon power recycle.

Did you figure out what the problem was related to in case of FW? Had many different problems each one a case apart... On PM ONLY PLEASE.
