Hi I'm new on here but just wanted to say thanks to e_im_70 ! :D

My Samsung 500gb drive was making a wierd high pitched noise as mentioned and doing the blue light that ends up blinking three times, not recognized anywhere on my laptop.

Did the percussive maintenance technique, (about 6 times, the smack that worked for me was on the topside off centre towards the end where the cable attaches) Noise changed to healthy, busy noise and light stayed on. laptop recogizes it again! Sorted!!...smacking it was quite satisfying too!

THANKS again, I'm now going to wrap the thing in cotton wool and treat it with kid gloves as I may've been treating it as if it was a portable more sturdy piece of kit! (which it should be shouldn't it!)

Alx

Hi! :) I have got the same model of this hard-disk. But yesterday I realized that there was a problem about this external hard-drive. I connected the HD and computer, I opened the directory of "My Computer", and saw that it didn't have the name "Samsung". Its name is the same as my internal harddrive. I tried to open it but it couldn't be opened. I clicked on it with the right button of my mouse, but it didn't work.

I looked at my HD, and its light was winking. I tried to scan it with my AntiVirus software; but it said that that device couldn't be read. I can see it in "My Computer", but can't open. I am getting mad each time I try. Please help me, I tried percussive maintenance over and over. But I'm afraid of seeing it in a worse breakdown. :(

(Sorry for my grammatical mistakes.)

Could we see the partition table and boot sector with Microsoft's Sector Inspector?
http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/SecInspect.zip

Extract the above archive to the one folder and execute the SIrun.bat file. The procedure will generate a report file named SIout.txt.

If your drive has a stiction fault, and if professional data recovery is too expensive for you, then percussive maintenance may save you. Alternatively you could pray to your favourite deity.

If you opt for professional recovery, be aware that even those DR people who claim to have recovered thousands of 3.5" desktop drives may have little experience with 2.5" drives. Incredibly, there are those who have never seen a stiction fault in a laptop drive. So my advice would be to choose wisely, if you value your data. I wouldn't want you to become someone's guinea pig.

what the . . . F**K

Whatever happened here was a miraculous anomaly.
Practice nothing you have read here.

Shocking, banging, unscrewing spindles etc all leads to death

My assumption is that this drive will work for about a 20 more hours.
Test it with hard disk sentinel. Find out when it will die.

That's what people say when they see the quote.

If the drive works for 20 more hours, that's plenty long enough to recover the data. It was headed for the bin, anyway.

I wish i tried that with the other 3 S2 hard drives i gave back under warranty? Percussive maintenance... i stopped using that technique years ago.. The keyboards started costing me a fortune :P

Why didn't you? You had already resigned yourself to losing your data, so AFAICS you had everything to again and nothing more to lose.

In fact, what do you suggest that a person do when his stiction-affected data aren't worth the cost of recovery? Other than percussive maintenance, are there any other DIY options available to him?
