I have one of the Seagate 7200.11 drives that is supposedly "not affected" by the firmware issue. My drive came with CC1F firmware and no updates are available. The drive is a data drive only, no operating system ect...

A few days ago I re-started my PC and the 7200.11 did not operate normally; it clicked approximately 11 times during POST then was not listed in Windows. I re-started the PC again and the 11 clicks have repeated each time. A call to Seagate was not helpful; they will not offer advice if the drive clicks or if it does not appear correctly in the BIOS.

During one of the re-boots the drive came up in the BIOS as listed below; the odd part is that when it does/did this it was listed as a 4.# Gb drive in the BIOS and an unformatted 4.# under disk management in Windows.

I have read hundreds of post regarding the firmware issues however i am concerned that i may have a different issue or a variant. Several other users of the ST31000333AS CC1F have reported the clicking issue on the Seagate forums with not good answers.

I have neglected backing up the drive for over a year (stupid i know) so i realize that i will be paying for recovery. I am a bit of an electronics hobbyist but i am concerned that my attempts to connect to the drive will potentially eliminate the ability for a recovery firm to get my data back.

1. Any suggestions on why the drive would only click during POST?

2. Any suggestions on a recovery firm to use that won't take advantage of me?

Same problem here with ST31000340AS. I turn on the pc, the HDD starts spinning, and sounds 11 clicks, 1 second cadence each. Then it stops and turns off.

scratchy, what cost would it be to recover the data?

You say yours is an endless "click-click-click.... spin up/down" cycle? (e.g. it doesn't click a while then spin down and stay spun down)

If so then yours could be fixable with firmware work (I would say a cost of around $250 assuming no physical problems, but the other two cases on this thread are almost certainly head problems IMHO and indicative of a cost around $800 + parts). Obviously these prices are only "guestimates" based on sight-unseen and would require lab analysis to confirm the type and extent of the fault(s).

No, it's spinning up all the time, until I disconnect pwr...
It's that normal clicking sounds it makes while calibrating. If I succeed to fix this with the "BSY" method, what firmware do I need, to keep the drive working?

You didn't get : drive should NOT click during post.

If the drive is stuck busy, it will hang so it WON'T be recognised at POST level.

If the drive CLICKS at POST there's something else.

Another thing : the "BSY" stat has a precise origin that should be pointed out BEFORE applying "fixes". Otherwise there is the risk of BRICKING the drive AND/OR loss of data and a simple firmware correctable problem turns into a thousand $ problem or data loss. BEWARE !

I have seen dozens of drives apparently BSY where the "internet stuff" was applied (but the problem was elsewhere) and had to do complex diagnose and recovery afterward..... "I have read this, I made that but now there's another problem...." "Really ?"

The McGyver/DIY internet "BSY" method isn't "one size fits all" I'm afraid.

I agree, it's not that usual BSY problem. But what could it be?

Does "LED:000000CC FAddr:0024CDC9" say something? Well, at a last chance I would change the PCB. If there's a problem with the mechanics, I have say good bye to the data. But since it didn't make any scratchy sounds, there's a good chance, isn't it?

Actually we have here 2 different problems in this thread. One is head/media damage that results "11 clicks then power down", and another is SD35 FW bug.
There is no easy fix for "11 clicks problem", only data recovery by an experienced professional may be possible.

In Europe, they have better access to the special non-invasive Russian magic drive repair chamber. It can handle both firmware and head issues with a click of a button. For those who are wondering, it has about 20% higher success rate than the data recovery spray.

These are the symptoms, pretty much exactly for me. I gather from reading this forum that i do not have either of the 2 bugs standard to this drive which are easily repairable?
Its not worth 800 dollars or so to recover the data to me personally, but it is always a sad day when you lose a hard drive with lots of work on it. Ill see if i can at least get an RMA. I do have several identical drives bought around the same time. Would just have to take them all out of machines and look at dates etc.
