Please, do you happen to have one of these for sale. My friends HDD is still working but cant get through to the data ase USB connector from PCB was broken. I just need this PCB and I can save all the data. Can you help?

A straight board swap probably won't work. The Marvell chip (big "M") probably contains adaptive data that would need to be transferred from patient to donor.

The easiest solution would be to perform microsurgery on the connector.

Just swapping a compatable board will not work , hence trying to get the original board to work would be the first and easier option

Hi Guys,

I need your help here.
Model: HM502JX
Issue: After connecting USB cable, drive is spinning but it's not recognized by Windows O/S. I want to give a try with connecting a SATA cable but I need to know which of these capacitors correspond to: Transmit+, Transmit-, Receive+, Receive- ?

Please check the picture attached, I have marked 4 capacitors with red numbers 1,2,3 and 4.
Will be grateful for your advice!
Thanks in advance, cheers!

forgot to write that the chip above it is JM20339

Update:
=======
Just found a datasheet here:
http://www.wison.com.tw/cht/document/LT ... 061012.pdf

In my case above:
1- RXP
2- RXN
3- TXN
4- TXP

Can you confirm if P means 'positive' + and N means 'negative' - ?

Thanks for everyone, i've registered only to let You now, that thanks to this topic, i was able to recover every bit from a crashed hard drive for a client.

Just to make things clear:
I've connected the power to the 3 large pins at the end(+5V middle, earth on sides, it'enough to connect the earth to one pin, they are connected)

According to VoodooPL's image, the pinout is
1 - B+
2 - B-
3 - A-
4 - A+
And the first pin of sata cable(and only the first!) has to be connected to the earth solder joint. Keep the sata wires equally long as possible. Use small diameter, very soft cables to connect to the pcb joints, like mouse cord inner wires.

Important: don't believe to pinouts.ru, the key/pipe is at the 7'th pin on the sata cable!
I had to connect the HDD to a different sata controller(fortunately i had two on the mobo), because it doesn't worked with an other HDD connected to the same controller.

Here is a potentially similar problem with an easier solution:

Hi guys, i read the post comments and my question is any of this USB - SATA conversion works for any one?
I have the same drive in front of me and need to change the PCB USB for SATA to have more control of the drive in PC3K.
I saw there is two distinct solutions:
1- is soldering in the 5 points in the back of PCB, but witch is TX,RX, ground, etc?
2- Remove the 4 capacitors close to JM chip and make connection with this points, same question, witch is TX,RX, ground?

If any could reply i appreciate,
Thanks in advance.

Consult the datasheet for the JMicron bridge IC.

Alternatively, assume that the Tx/Rx pairs are wired in the same order as the SATA data connector (or reverse order), and try it.

DR guys rarely bother with fixing original PCB, it is much faster replace it with a good one.
There is compatible SATA PCB for this model, the trick is to transfer original ROM. I'm afraid you won't be able to transfer the ROM w/o proper tools, because the ROM image is inside Marvell ASIC (for shown PCB)

If you want to convert the PCB then you can follow fzabkar's and freeone's advice they pretty much pointed out where to solder the SATA wires but it requires decent soldering skills and basic electronics knowledge.
The capacitors must be removed (because they transfer signal from Marvell ship to USB bridge and we don't want that) and SATA cable wires could be soldered to the pads of removed capacitors, only to the side which is closer to the Marvell chip (basically where the digits are on this picture )

Hi everybody,

As you can imagine, i have the same issue that the other people on this board.
My usb connector on my samsung usb drive 250go is broken and it seems really difficult to repair so i decided to explore others possibilities as described here.

At the beginning, my drive can spin on and i heard head and rotation (when i made contacts between usb connector and pcb), it was seen by computer but not recognized at all (model, capacity,...). But thereafter, the connector was too damaged to continue with that method.

So, i have read what others people have done and removed the 4 capacitors (as loki said) and connected Tx ( /-) and Rx ( /-) from the pcb to a connector (as you can see on the picture).
On this connector, i can plug a sata cable.

So:
RX/TX (green/blue/red/white) => connector => sata cable => motherboard
blue (on the left) => GND on molex motherboard
red (on the left) => 5V on molex motherboard

I checked my soldering works (no contacts between RX/TX and /-).
When i powered up, blue light was on and i heard the disk rotation but no head and spin on.

My question is what can i check to see if i cracked something else, verify my solderings, any ideas ... ?

In the same time, i'm searching others compatible pcb as donor.

ref:
Model: HM252HX
HDD P/N: HM252HX/VPK
PCB Number BF41-00282A 00
PCB Info M7S-S_Line Rev .01 R00
Number of Main Chip: 88i8823-TFJ2
Number of Motor Chip: TLS2505
Bios chip ? (inside main chip or it's the 8 contacts chip near my solderings)

Thank you in advance for any suggestions

I made these changes, raised capacitors.
Food intake as in the photo, or from USB.
It gives me the same error sound.
What can I now?
What evidence?

thanks

Hi,

you can read my previous post here, maybe it can's help:
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=27018
What sort of sound have you ? rotation sound ? clicking sound ?
Make sure you have 5V (for my case i have to take stable 5V directly on molex, under voltage doesn't work for me)
Have you a terminal access ?

Hello!
Is Samsung HM502JX drive could be good head stack donor for Samsung HM501IX?
Thanks for all feedback.

Hi everyone. Thank you so much dadoo63, i did the same wiring (see explanation below) and I now have normal access to the drive. Data is being recovered.
Thank you!

PS : it took me several tries to achieve a good & working soldering but now it works :)

Thanks for your reply

I cannot solder a new usb connector in place of the one broken. I've already seen the links you gave but it didn't help me and I don't want to replace by a sata connector :s

I don't really know how to repair it now :(

I've find a way to make it working temporarely.
I've solder the power like on hadner's screenshot
and I've solder the TX/RX like that :

When I connect the HDD, it works and I can recover my datas but regularely it fails, I just have to unplug and plug again.

Thank you all for your help ;)

Hi,
my HDD is broken at the USB connector. We solderd the 5V and ground.
Also we put RXN / RXP and TXP /TXN on the board.
We put of the 2 caps.

This is my SATA Kabel:
-------------------------
|RXP RXN TXN TXP| |
----------------------| |
----

When I boot up Linux I recieve the folling error messages:

ATA8: COMRESET failed errno = -32
reset failed
irq_stat 0x00000040, connection status changed
SError: { CommWake DevExch }
Exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x404000

Do anybody know anything to help me out of trouble?

Best Regards

You should be connecting to the MCU end of each capacitor rather than the bridge end.
