Re: Samsung HM502JX USB Only?

You say you've had it soldered back on, by an electronic pro?

I must admit I have a soldering wizard who does this kind of fine soldering work for me, my soldering skills and/or eyes are sometimes not up to the job if it's been proper butchered! :-)

Does it spin up now when you plug it in?

Hello,
I have exactly the same issue, USB connector is broken.
On the USB connnector you have height connections (if I'm right) four on sides (big connections) and four underneath.

USB connector

When I try to hold the USB connector in its right place, my drive is right alimented but shutdown after one minute. I guess the four big connections are good but it miss one underneath...that's why it doesn't work :? Does someone know which are the different role for all these connections ?

I have also tried to replace the PCB with an other one (same reference number) but it doesn't work... The drive is alimented but not recognized by my laptop. So it seems that fzabkar was right by saying that adaptative data are embedded in the Marvell chip.

I'm not an expert of hardware so I haven't understood everything in previous posts about how to setup a SATA connection. If someone has tried and succeeded to do it it will be very helpful if he or she can describe in details how to proceed :D (Hook up SATA points and components to remove if necessary...)

I will try to find someone skilled to manage to solder again the USB connector... Hope it will work !

Best regards.

That should be the easiest thing to try, even if you need to use wirewrap wire. Let us know if it doesn't work.

Best of luck.

Connector solded again !
The drive is well alimented, detected by my laptop but unfortunately not recognized...
The connector seems to be well repair so there is perhaps something more.

Too bad !

I would suspect that 5V pins touched one of the data pins and burned something there when the connector was moving around. A choke on the end of data bus (that small SMD-thingie across both data lines) might have gotten cracked from the impact of connector and is non-functional now.

Second guess is that hdd spins down or goes into standby after a minute because no data is being transmitted - data bus is non-functional - might still be an issue with soldering - dirt, oils etc that short it to ground or between D+ and D-

Is the cable ok and tested? Are USB ports on computer ok and can provide the needed power? Check for shorts. Check for continuity from USB - cable to those black resistors. Check for pull-up/pull-down resistors from data pins.

Try a computer with USB 1.1 standard (it is far more tolerant to errors) if the HDD supports it.

Hello,
Yes USB wire is ok and alimentation is ok too. I guess pins for data transfer could be not well repair or as you said the data bus could be non-functional.
I discussed with some companies which are specialized in data recovery and the next action will be probably to try to change the PCB and transfer the chip which contains the ROM on the new PCB.

To be continued...

Hil,

i have the same problem.

After make the right SATA Tx/Rx connection and powered from USB (only +5V and ground pin).
The drive spin up (blue LED is on), but NO DRIVE is detected.?, may be work in USB-Mode ?

My SATA PINS Tx/Rx are solder direct to the capacitors (the capacitors are between cable and JMicron bridge IC.
or which other capacitors must replaced ?????

Whats wrong ? (must i replace the capacitors and solder direct to the IC or ....)
HELP !

I'm not going to try to "talk you through" your DIY recovery attempt, but I'll make 2 comments, which may help you. Remember, of course, that depending on several factors, your recovery attempts may be unsuccessful and may damage the PCB etc.:

a) I suggest that you include a clear, close-up photo(s) showing your wiring & connections. That will be clearer than you trying to describe everything in words.

b) If I correctly understand your comment about soldering "direct to the capacitors", that suggests that you have not followed the earlier instructions from other members. Again, the situation will become clearer to anyone who wants to help you, if you include the photo(s) that I recommend.

Hi,

here is the picture.

PCB.jpg

The SATA cable is direct connected to the RED POINTS Tx/Rx to capacitors!
With SATA is the drive NOT DETECTED !, with USB cable is all OK!

Whats wrong ? (must i replace the capacitors and solder direct to the IC or ....)

ANY IDEA, THANKS FOR HELP !

Re: Samsung HM502JX USB Only?

You need to remove the capacitors. At the moment there are two SATA controllers trying to communicate with your drive -- the one in the Initio chip, and the one on your computer's motherboard. Removing the capacitors disconnects the Initio IC.

Hello, just joined.

Site looks good!
My story:
Samsung HM502JX with an issue. don't know exactly,
No power > pins a bit damaged > repaired still no power
Client says that for a while they needed to "wiggle" connector to get it to work.

Don't have access to good soldering abilities and don't want to remove capacitors yet.
As per picture attached and based on what has been said he so far, could someone identify what 1, 2, 3 are for?
+/-5 GND?

Hi everybody,
I got my Samsung HM502JX powered! So, 1,3 are for GND and 2 is for +5V.

zhelana did you get ? How was your solder?

mande01 And you ?

Look at my solder:

I've tried reversing the wires GND and the TX and RX, but still not working and I see this message:

Hi fzabkar, I followed your instructions letter by letter.

The HDD is powered through USB, I removed the capacitors and connected the respective TX RX wires of the SATA cable to the IC according to your advice.

I checked continuity with a multimeter and it's fine and there isn't any short circuit.

The HDD spins but nothing happens when I turn on the computer, Windows doesn't see my SATA connection.

Am I missing anything?

Thanks very much.

Hey guys, this is my first post here. I was just wondering if there was a USB to SATA converter on the market. I'd like to fit this drive in a laptop, where space is really limited... And doesn't allow for soldering wires and stuff. Or could I do a board swap with some other drive? This drive has 500 GB, which I really don't want to waste. Please help.... It's a relatively new drive too,so I'm not really inclined to remove capacitors and other circuit components.

Hi Habner,

have you find a way to make it working?

Can anyone help me on it? My USB connector is broken, I've tried to connect like Habner but same issue :(

Thanks all for your help ;)

Can you not solder a new usb connector or are the tracks damaged?

Thanks for your reply

I cannot solder a new usb connector in place of the one broken. I've already seen the links you gave but it didn't help me and I don't want to replace by a sata connector :s

I don't really know how to repair it now :(

I've find a way to make it working temporarely.
I've solder the power like on hadner's screenshot
and I've solder the TX/RX like that :

My english is not so good, hope you allready understand, what I'm writing ;-).

Tryed anyone of you using another controller-board? Is there a compatible SATA-Controller from another Samsung-HDD-Model? I think it would be an easy way just to switch the complet electronic and try to use the board of a HM501II or an HM500JI (http://www.samsung.com/us/business/oem- ... 11_web.pdf) instead of the original one. What do you think?
