could you describe a little bit more. Is your drive still in enclosure or not? You need data or not?

Hi All!

I have a faulty WD Elements 1023 (WD7500KMVV) which shows the following behaviour:

- when plugged into USB, HDD spins up, sounds normal
- LED blinks or lights continously
- Windows Disk Management shows "eggtimer" for 2-3 minutes, nothing happens ...
- After 5-10 minutes, sometimes it is recognized as Drive E, but without file system
- Data Recovery software tell, that all sectors are bad
- When the issues started, I was still able to see the folder structure, but no content (empty)

I tried Linux and Windows, several USB cables etc. -> always the same. When the problems

I am familiar with soldering, but just want to make sure before I do something wrong:

Is this issue likely to be a faulty SATA/USB bridge chip? Could I have any success when removing C13, C18, C31 and C33 and solder a SATA cable to the E71, E72, E73 and E75 points? Or does this sound like a completely different issue to you?

would someone be able to tell if the above error desciption fits to a faulty USB bridge?
I just don't want to damage the HDD even more by desoldering the capacitors, in case you say the USB bridge couldn't be the problem in this case.

No, I wouldn't say the USB board is the culprit at all.

Almost certainly bad sectors on the drive (which the USB bridge doesn't like very much) or a firmware issue with the actual drive.

Shouldn't be too difficult to recover the data (at this stage) for someone with the right tools and knowledge.

A simple questions.
If i make the usb to sata bypass and the data is encrypted... can i just format the HDD and use normally???
There is some risk to use with the bypass like overheat or something like that??

I found this but it is without any description.

Those appear to be the SATA Tx/Rx differential pairs, plus the +5V and Ground pins. The photo is demonstrating how to convert the drive from USB to SATA.

Same MCU, different boards. Follow the Tx/Rx pins from the SATA connector to the MCU.

I have the same WD5000BMVW-11AMCS0 with real time encryption, and I changed my failed pcb a few years ago (need swap U8 and U12). I done sata connection at that time (for nothing), and I can certainly find the right pinout if you want.

how can I know if there is real time encryption?

I think with same part number, your drive have also real time encryption. When I connected my drive with sata connection, I couldn't see any files, and it was ok with new pcb (usb 3.0 connection). No doubt on encryption with this drive.
