Have the same problem with my HDD, but the model is WD10TMVW, need to get my data.

I hear that it spinned OK, I suppose that the problem with controller. The instruction posted above dosnt have the same pins to connect to SATA.

You need to show us the other side of the PCB.

That said, many people at WD's forums are reporting physical connection problems with the micro-USB connector. It could be as simple as that.

recently I've had a few cases of drives from WD Essential cases that refuse access via the USB and had to be converted to SATA. Not had one like that from WD Passport thankfully, as we'd have encryption to deal with.

Which Essential drives are you referring to?

According to WD's documentation, both My Book Essential and Passport drives have encryption. However, you can order models where encryption has been disabled.

http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=240
http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=440

Moreover, the Essential drives that I have encountered (via the forums) are 3.5" models with a separate USB-SATA bridge board.

Thank you for your reply!

I have WD wdbgys0010bbk-u0 model.
When I get it, i turned off any encryption (get experience from) ande deleted WD software from the drive. There was 1 partition, simple ntfs.

Do you mean WD disk controller is making on-line encryption?

Если диск был куплен в России от белого поставщика (официально) , там не должно быть шифрования .
Правительство запрещает .

If drive was bought in russia , official one, there is shouldn't be any encryptions.
Goverment forbids that

Dr Kiev.

I know it, it's activities and right job of our FSB (former KGB - FAPSI) structure. The prohibition is for foreign encryption methods. But there are no any declaration or notification from WD for the methods. And you know the difference: "should be in our country" and reality

WD Support:

Here are the SATA Tx/Rx connection points:
http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/HDD/WD ... _Tx_Rx.jpg

You need to remove capacitors C90-93.

I don't know which pair is Tx or Rx, but the 4 signals will probably be in the same order as a SATA data connector:

Great Thanks fzabkar, but without your help I cannot understand where is TX/RX contact points exactly. And why I need to remove the capacitors?

You need to remove the capacitors in order to disconnect the symwave SW6316 bridge IC.

The Tx/Rx signals are the 4 plated through-holes inside the squares.

I suspect that they are arranged either as ...

Transmit+, Transmit-, Receive-, Receive+

... or ...

Receive+, Receive-, Transmit-, Transmit+

Code:
MCU                capacitors            symwave bridge

Transmit+    ----x-----||-----------
Transmit-    ----x-----||-----------

Receive-     -----x----||-----------
Receive+     -----x----||-----------

Make your SATA connections at the points marked "x".

in my case it was only a cold solder joint at the USB connector
I was able to backup all data bending the cable at the connector a bit
I will now remove the controller and resolder USB connector

maybe that will help others....

Can anyone confirm that both U12 and U14 need to be swapped when the PCB has failed?

For the benefit of other readers, the question from sknopp above was just answered on the new thread created here:

Technically all I said is that U12 needs to be moved

I think it would be more beneficial to read some other threads

Understood drc :) I was just trying to avoid people replying to sknopp here, without them knowing about your reply in the thread that I linked (started by the same poster), and therefore hopefully avoiding duplicated effort etc.

Apologies for the confusion. I posted on this thread and then thought that it might get overlooked given the length of time it has been around and the number of responses it had already received. Will be more patient next time.
