is there any way to test the TX-/+ to see if they are in/outputting?

A direct SATA connection will leave you with the dilemma of encrypted data.

If you opt for a board swap, then you will need to transfer the 8-pin serial flash memory chip at U12.

As for testing for SATA Tx/Rx activity, I would first confirm the integrity of the USB Data+ and Data- signal pair.

To this end, I would test for the presence of discrete pullup or pulldown resistors. These resistors signal to the host that a USB peripheral is attached. I would also confirm that continuity exists between the pins of the Initio chip and the respective pins at the host end of the cable.

I had a problem with this hard drive (Model WD10TMVV-11TK7S1). Stopped working, not recognized in bios, and when connected it clicks smoothly 4-5 times and then stops but the light is on static. After researching for 2 months i decided to open the drive, and see if i could connect the drive to a SATA Connector, but i ended up opening the top cover and plug in the USB cable just to see what the heck was the clicking sound. I saw that the armor was stuck on the surface and was not moving at all but the disk was spinning, so i pushed the armor towards the docking bay (smoothly, not to much pressure), Then i put the cover on and plugged in the USB an voila ready to save the data in another drive.
When opening the drive "CLEAN ENVIRONMENT"
When removing the armor "POWER ON OR YOU'LL SCRATCH THE SURFACE"
If you have this clicking sound
Untitled.rar
AUDIO FILE
(258.55 KiB) Downloaded 2625 times

Its a high chance that the armor is stuck on the surface.
I recovered 12 HDD in the last 4 days by doing this trick

Thanks for posting this ataho2011. I have the same problem judging from the way the drive behaves and the sound. I'm very hesitant to open it though. Can I achieve this "Clean Environment" as a normal citizen or is that some kind of lab thing? I have a couple of important files I can't replace on my broken drive but the loss is not that crippling, that I will have to stop my current uni project (backed up most of the data already). Should I attempt to do this? How much would it be to send the drive to someone? I know I'm asking things that I can research myself (and no one likes people mooching info from them), but I'm currently not in a position where I have regular access to the internet, so I would appreciate it if someone could point me to a resource or brief me a bit on what to do.

Thanks anyway,
Robert

Is it just me , or what ataho2011 wrote makes no sense whatsoever ?

I'm also pretty sure by now that it's a fake post meant for people to further damage their drives.

One of the biggest problems I have found with these drives, and WD external drives in general with a USB connection, is a floating ground. If the drive is just sitting there going "Da-doonk - Da doonk" (Connecting, disconnecting sound of windows discovering/not) - Remove the drive from the external case, and run a wire (copper cat 5e) or similar from the chasis of the HDD (screw hole - use a small screw to attach wire - DO NOT BREAK THE CASE OF THE ACTUAL HDD OPEN) to the Metal ground (outer metal sheild) where the USB cable plugs in (tack solder - be careful of temps) - Test drive before reassembling case.

Attempt this type of repair AT YOUR OWN RISK AND THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THIS WILL FIX YOUR PROBLEM, IT MAY VOID YOUR DRIVE WARRANTY. If you are not capable of this type of electronics repair, find someone who is.

Hope this helps someone...

Hi feeble, can you message me the password ? I really need it. I have to find a way to fix my hard disk. It is very important for me.

I appreciate your help very much.

In one of the previous posts, it is said that the problem has been, somehow, solved, but the used could not attach any picture of the repaired drive. Did anyone manage to fix a drive ?

I have same problem with my hard disk. Can I detect my HDD using Belkin USB Hub with power adaptor ?

Thank you for your guys solution.

Hi,

I have this drive formatted to use with OS X and I am having the same problems as everyone is mentioning. This drive has my pictures that I've collected over the years.

It stopped working after I was copying large files onto it and the computer crashed so it didn't get unmounted correctly. Any advice or insight on how I can recover the data from this drive would be greatly appreciated! At this point I'm willing to pay someone a little money to help me with this problem.

Thanks!

I don't understand why some one would say that this post is fake. I recovered 15 drives so far.
And i opened the first drive in a normal environment (not a clean environment)
and i was able to recover the data 100% ( and that HDD still works )
I think i understand why your saying that my post is fake, but i want you to explained to me why do you think it is fake:
Did you do it and it didn't work ?
Or are you one of this guys that is trying to make it sound so hard to do it so that in the end you can charge the costumer
500$ or maybe 1000$ if the costumer is so desperate to recover the data.

I went to 5 data recovery shops, and i tried to find info on the net
I called the western digital costumer support.
In the end i opened the drive and i was able to recover the data .
But i have the best way to prove that i am not fake.
Send me a drive that has the same problem that my drive had and i will recover the data and send it back to you.
You pay me only the postal fee, nothing more.

We are perhaps skeptical because it sounds as if you are an end user and not a DR guy, but you say you have recovered 15 drives like this? Even in a very busy DR lab with many thousands of dollars in equipment would you see 15 drives with the exact same problem in the time frame you seemingly infer. Just sounds a bit odd is all.

Re: WD10TMVV

Iv been working with Hardware, Software and Data recovery for the last 7 years so if that is not enuf than I'm not a pro
and half of the drives that i recovered are from my friends.
I don't know about you but i think that these type of drives are dropping dead by the minute
Anyway i tried to help other people with my post but everybody was in a hurry to label me "FAKE"

Take it easy guys I'm not trying to take the costumers away from you.
There's a lot of fish in the sea. No need to fight.

If the armor of THE HDD is stuck in the surface you can try to connect the drive to any interface that your can create but in the end there
are only 2 ways to fix the problem
1: Open the drive and dock the armor in the docking bay by hand.
2: If you are a super human and posses the power of telekinesis (ability to move objects without physically touching them )
You don't need to open the drive.
Personally i don't know anyone that can do the second one so i will stick with the first option.

This does not make any sence.
ataho2011 wrote:I recovered 12 HDD in the last 4 days by doing this trick
Was it 12 drives out of 12 drives you have recovered?
We do not see that number of drives with head stiction coming in a period of 1 month...

ataho2011 wrote:If the armor of THE HDD is stuck in the surface

Is it somehow related to superpowers of a drive?
Like if drive lost its superpowers and cannot move anything without autopsy because its armor now stuck somewhere and bla-bla-bla

What is drive's armor anyway?

"Doomer" sorry that i don't know the exact terms that you use here in us. I am from Europe and English is not my first language.
But the armor is the part that holds the magnetic heads that r/w the surface of the HDD (Hard Disc Drive) or the headstack

And i think that the problem with these drives is the premature removal of the drive.
(The costumers don't do a safe removal of the drive and most of them don't change the settings for fast hardware removal, plus the sensitivity of this type of external drive in the end you have a bad drive)

And "harddrivespecialist" i did the recovery in 4 days but my friends had those HDD for months siting and collecting dust.

I think the thing you are referring to called either slider or HGA (you need to find out yourself)
But I personally like how you call it armor :)
If you are not afraid of ugly roughly-English text you can find out some terms from here - http://hddscan.com/doc/HDD_from_inside.html

Hard drives designed to park heads stack in the moment of cutting power it is known (in some circles) that VCM controller triggers special signal which parks heads using remaining energy of spinning motor and it even uses this energy to stop the motor faster after power cut-off
