Hello,

How to connect SCSI Ultra320 drives to a recent workstation?

I have an LSI Logic Ultra320 SCSI Storage Controller Card LSI20320IE PCI-Express x4

What cable should be used to connect this drive to the LSI20320IE controller?

Does the controller power the drive? or do I need to use another way to do it?

Thank you in advance for your help
Lamine

The LSI20320IE card draws only 0.6A @ 12V from the PCIe slot (page 45). It doesn't seem to be enough to power a HDD.

https://docs.broadcom.com/doc/12353413

That said, there is a 1.5A polyswitch (MINISMDC150F-2) near the SCSI connector.

Hi @fzabkar

Thank you for your help.

To be honest, I didn't understand what do you mean by "there is a 1.5A polyswitch (MINISMDC150F-2) near the SCSI connector"

What cable needs to be used to connect the drive to this card? its not clean, most of the cables I found on eBay are Male-Male

Kind regards
Lamine

here https://docs.broadcom.com/doc/12352276 we can read:

PCI Express Power 10W (without providing termination power)

and

Termination Power Self-resetting 1.5A fuse per channel

The manual says "ULTRA320 SCSI LVD/SE", 68-pin. Page 21 shows the cables. I guess the choice of cable depends on the type of drive your have, either single-ended or differential.

The presence of the polyswitch suggests that power is being drawn in that area.

sosrecup, You need a cabel from internal SCSI LVD 68 pin connector of your controller to 68 pin SCSI LVD connector. And you need an adapter for your hard drive SCA80 to 68 pin LVD connectror or SCSI backplane from some server
