I am starting to suspect that the proper approach is to use Google translate to open accounts on the Russian and Chinese sites, and then ask such questions there, and hope that the translated text doesn't get warped into something like " I'm going to have sex with your wife and chop your head off with a machete' '. Answers do appear to be obtainable there for those who ask. Particularly the Chinese sites.

j,,1 appears to reload and reset and bring back F>. Did you try to load the cert fCCC, then j,,1? Did you try switching to T> after the load? No where have I seen j,,1 documented, but it appears in series of commands in the Russian and Chinese sites. Someone there said it resets the drive.

Like I said, i am not the expert, if it toasts your drive well I said it might...

I think i saw that Seagate Terminal has a command to test and repair the factory tracks. Can take up to 72 hours...

Most new Seagate drives will be changed over to the new test platform (Still use serial port but no ascii). Which means no terminal access unless you have proper diag SW. Which people won't.

And I am sure its changed because of the open for all that now prevails.

Does this mean that, in future, only those select few who are privy to the fruits of industrial espionage will have terminal access? ;-)

Or are we to believe that the intricate details will be uncovered purely through painstaking reverse engineering?

The chinese reverse engineered the Eiffel Tower(It is a full sized, exact dimension and same metal construction as the one in lovely Paris) -- the new Serial output should be a piece of pie for them..

IMHO, the Russians are probably the best reverse engineers. Or maybe it's just that they are the only ones that publish their work in the English language.

Anyway, it's a shame that they have a KGB goon in the Kremlin. That would be like having J. Edgar Hoover in the White House. If they ever get rid of their old guard, the Russians are going to be technology leaders. The Chinese will only ever be hit-and-run merchants, with no long term business strategies. You can't build a corporation founded on nepotism and corruption.

It's because USSR had maybe the best schools in the world (waaay better than US schools) and they were free, so there are more educated people in todays Russia than in any other places
But not anymore

Chinese, Japanese and Korean schools are good too BTW

I think it also depends upon the person who is being educated, not just the educational framework.

I wouldnt want to send my children to Russian Schools. Not alone let them live there. Sure Moscow, Petersburg all the large towns are fantastic.. But go a bit in land and youll be shocked... Sure its better now than it used to be.. is it?
I think most of these Eastern Block guys are only good at what they do because they did it their whole life and dedicated everything todo it.. because there was nothing else todo really.. Sit outside and have some vodka with his dad and his buddies sat on the dud bomb shell.. I might be a bit extreme.. but this is a slowly fading reality in Polish areas..
At university i have met allot of Chinese and Japanese guys doing computer science degrees.. Some of them did bio chemistry on the side because they were bored of engineering cpu's... I have not met any Russians .. so i could be biased.

Also noticed that. One thing I picked up is that google translates the Russian for 'drive' into 'screw' in English if I'm not mistaken or that's what I'm assuming.

I have been to Russian villages. Fun, clever and friendly people everywhere :O) The toilets, roads and bloody bus drivers need some work granted but other than that it's not that bad.

I have been to Ukraine on many occasions, most are just as friendly. They even offer tours to Chernobyl if you want ;o)
