wd5000bmvv probable PCB failure

September 21st, 2010, 15:52

I had a break in recently and my backup drives were stolen. I do however have a dead WD Passport that should have most of my work still in it. So I'm hoping someone here can give me some advice. When the drive stopped working it did not make any clicks or odd noises, it just stopped spinning up and stopped mounting. I checked on my linux machine and dmesg does not show any communication with the drive when I plug it in. The drive itself lights up when I plug it in, and then begins flashing. The usb controller on this drive is integrated into the main pcb, consequently I don't have the option of trying it internally or w/ a new enclosure. Repairing this drive is beyond my skill level, but maybe someone here could recommend a pro. The data is valuable but I'm not exactly wealthy.
Thanks!

Absolutely not at your level, but there's always a reputable pro from this forum in your area (unless you don't mind sending the drive abroad so the range / choice is much broader). Where are you exactly if possible to say it in public ?

I'm in Durango, Colorado, USA. I am not opposed to sending the drive out, quite the opposite. I just want to find a person or business who definitely has the skill and equipment to attempt this recovery.

Here's a photo of the circuit board. I don't see anything burnt, but I do notice a discolored spot that might be the culprit. Hope this is of use.
