Dear Gurus:
I have a Hitachi Deskstar HDS728080PLAT20 that died on me. Won't spin. I assume the PCB is dead. I got a donor hard disk, same model, pcb codes match, look the same.
Now, I am very novice in this matter, so I thought I could just swap the PCBs, but from reading forums I find that I need to transfer NVRAM as well. I'm just a user, and I have no clue how to do it. I can, however soldier basic things, and as far as I understand, I can re-soldier some 8-legged chip.
I found this image, which looks a lot like my PCBs:
http://www.chipmunk.nl/plaatjes/untitled-98.jpgSomeone on these forums said that the chip is an 8-legged chip above the "Infineon" chip.. but all I have is a blank space there. The 8 contacts are there, but there is no chip, neither on the donor or the original PCB.
