With MHDD have to modify BIOS setting to non-AHCI setting, skips my mind what the exact name of it is now.

But if the drive is not showing capacity in BIOS, then the issues are more advanced, firmware, mechanical, both, likely bad sectors to some degree.

Whatever you do, do not issue any random commands. You can brick your drive to no return. 7200.12 asa tricky drive.

You were absolutely right, I turned off AHCI and the capacity shows in BIOS as 1000GB

Also, I started MHDD and got the following screen shot after hitting F2 to get the drive information.

Also I tried the SCAN (F4) function, but I wasn't sure if I should do that, so I stopped it after a few minutes. It looks like the drive is recognized by MHDD now. With the above information what do you think is a good next step to try to recover the data?

So far so good.

The next step is to get a picture of the SMART values.
Then after is to use the F4 command, change the start to LBA to an LBA value close to the end, maybe like a million back from the end. Press enter and then F4 again. This will scan the end of the drive. The goal here is to determine if it reads LBAs at the end of the drive just like it has been doing in the beginning per your picture.

If it does read LBAs at the end, then try to clone per hddrec's suggestion. Take ample time and study what cloning software you are most comfortable with and more importantly the one that will not leave room for errors. Do not rush in choosing. Rather, I would even suggest you practice using another working drive to get a sense of how it works. Preferably something in DOS or Linux based.

Warning: A specialized hardware imager typically used by professionals will yield the best recovery results, therefore software based cloning applications are limited in their ability to deal with failing degraded drives, hence often increasing chances of further degradation on the drive.

Hi labtech and hhddrec

Thank you both very much for your help. I was able to use the systemrescuecd disc to recover data from my seagate drive. It turned out that there were a total of 25 errors on the first run (reading good sectors only) and then the 2nd run to retry on the bad sectors, the total number increased to 30. Nonetheless, the total data loss was about 1MB at the end of the first run, and the bad sectors trimming took it down to 300kB, so it doesn't look like I have a lot of data loss. I am pretty fortunate. My files are now accessible on the new drive, not even sure how I will figure out which file(s) might be corrupted.

Thank you again for all your help!

The terminal response you see is normal - there is nothing out of place here. Also, you already tried 7200.11 fix which means there is very good chance you clear some important entries in NRG list. If there is no unusual noises or behaviour then probably it was a simple fix for someone with the right knowledge on it. Potentially it could be some translator issue, but the 7200.11 fix 'as is' is not suitable for this. But if NRG is now gone, recovery will not be so simple and if its important you should ship it to someone reputable who can get it done for you.

Hi Ratty,

if 7200.11 solution not solves your drive maybe you have an intensive fw corruption, heads or media problems maybe too.

You must contact witrh local pro to get any chance if your data is important

Well ... I've tried 7200.11 fix ... but there was no response from terminal ... only (P)SATA Reset after connect.
Do you think that connection with terminal could damage NRG?

Pcb is 3.3V or 1.8V?

If 1.8V, you may have no reply to ctrl-z.

I would purchase a USB-LVTTL adapter based on the CP2104 bridge or perhaps the "D" version of the PL-2303HX controller. You will probably find that the standard offerings only support 3.3V supplies, but it would be very simple to modify them for 1.8V and 2.5V using fixed or adjustable LDO regulators (eg LD1117-18).

See http://http://www.alexsoft.org/viewtopi ... 192&p=1779

For example, a typical CP2104 design would connect the VDD output from the IC's internal 3.3V regulator to the IC's VIO input. To modify this design for 1.8V I/O, you would cut this VDD-VIO connection and wire the output of your external LDO regulator to the VIO pin.

Alternatively, see the level shifter in the following thread:
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=29286

It works by converting a 0V-1.8V output range from the HDD to a 0.6V-2.4V input range for the bridge.

But I think 7200.11 fix is only for 7200.12 with large 3.3V pcb.

The "m" command in the 7200.11 fix should not be applied to 7200.12 models. It results in partial LBA access due to a failure to account for a non-resident G-list. Apparently the fix works provided that the NRG-list is empty, but fails otherwise. That's why some "professionals" have reported success in the past.

Just wait few minutes, or try to reset BUSY (find out in this forum how to short connect pins for exact model PCB). On DFL-ST device you can click Hard reset and you will get the prompt F3 T>.
