seagate ST3750330AS i/o device error

i got a 750gb hd in an external enclosure and had worked fine for past 2 years. but today while was saving some downloads i recieved a failed to access due to an i/o device error message.

i did the whole restart pc and the ext drive, no change. i swapped to every other usb port with no success. lastly i removed from the ext enclosure and directly attached in into my pc with the same outcome.

i also noticed that neither in the enclosure or on the pc does it list the drives name. it was named "storage" but now just reads "local drive".

any ideas?

Hi,

Is the drive still spinning? Is it making any sorts of noises out of the ordinary, or does it sound perfectly fine when you spin it up? Did anything happen before it gave this error (did you bump the drive, did it hit any errors copying files, etc)?

I suspect no one has responded because there is not enough details given about the nature of the failure...

The drive still spins and doesnt make any suspicious noises. i was downloading files directly to it when i got the i/o error.

windows can see the drive just cannot read it at all, not even the drives given name. bios however can read everything size, platters, the lot.

windows seatools was just the same as windows can detect but not read. ive got a the dos version ready to go just waiting on the replacement drive... before i start messing with it anymore

what sucks the most is i was getting all new replacement drives this weekend anyway as a precaution. just a week too late

Seems to be either a firmware issue or bad sectors (with possibly weak heads). Likely firmware though.
How long have you been using this for?

have you tried to connect to the terminal port to see what the hard drive tell to you?

okie dokie, seems the drive was a total goner. i got the replacement drive, figured it would be beeter to wait until i got the new drive before i started messing around with the old 1 too much.

i booted up in the dos version of sea tools and ran the tests. sea tools verified all the drive info but it failed the short test and only completed 1% of the advanced test and failed any repairs. at that point it was pretty much a given, but i figured i may as well try it all so i then updated its firmware as "labtech" suggested but changed nothing... RIP.

I am really sorry, but I did not advise to update the firmware in any way. I said it is likely a firmware issue. Updating it was/is not the solution. The best thing to do is to get a terminal read out as it was suggested above.

nonononono! don't update the firmware!
What you have to do is to connect with the terminal cable and diagnose the messages of the disk.

If you don't know what to do next you can try to search on the forum with the error codes..
(or send it to a pro.. )
