What exactly does the REMAP option do in MHDD ?

It's my understanding that hard drives have a certain number of spare sectors that can be used, which can be utilized by the drives ECC, but these spare sectors can run out.

Is remap similar to this ? If the drive's spare sectors have been used up, how would a remap help?
