I have gotten a case with 6 systems that suffered fire damage this week.

2 have been recovered successfully as of current. 2 others are in recovery at this moment, 1 is about as old as the earth itself and of little value to the client. This leaves 1 important HD! The problem with this drive is that the PC was burned really bad, not just from the outside, but from the inside as well. Cleaning this one has been somewhat difficult, but the real fun part is that I have no idea what for a model the drive is. The PCB is totally melted. Guessing from the form factor the drive looks like a WD. Probably a 40GB or 80GB or possible even a 160GB. I have not gotten to the point where I can examine the platters yet, but I know for sure that I will need PCB and preamp donor. I am not sure how I can identify the drive for proper donor sourcing without DCM and Model number.

could the preamp code be helpful?

Just to make things short:
Try to find the eeprom, and read it.
If no luck, the drive is unrecoverable, because the platter reached the curie point, and the magnetic domains are gone....

If you can show up pictures, maybe we can recognize the drive better for you.

which eprom are you referring to?

excuse me, but if the pcb is 'totally melted', how can he read out an eeprom...? it is probably in really bad condition.
But agree with the other statement that in such case probably the internals are badly damaged by the heat.
And indeed, pics would be handy...

Yes, If Janos was referring to ROM, then that's not going to work. The only thing left from the PCB is a pile of black tar.

I would almost guarantee from the pictures that it is a 80GB Diamond Max 9. Probably a 6Y080L0 and the code will probably be K,*,*,A.

This is my pictures, not quasimodo's pictures.
Anyway, you are right, the mdel match, i don't know about the asm code, because the top label was destroyed completely.

Not that it matters at this point but the drive tops that have the "C" were the Conner drives that I am fairly certain Seagate merged with Conner many moons back and kept the case for a long while until they moved to newer family of production best I recall. Thanks for the pics good to see how bad it can get in a fire.
