Hi all,

I have a problem with this hard drive...It is usualy in an Imac.
So, this disk has crashed; the drive spin up but the heads go to center, back in the park position, center again,..and the drive finally stop.
I have found a donor, exactly the same disk, and change the PCB.
The problem was the same with the new PCB, so I put back the PCB in the donor...and same problem with the donor!
The problem is that the owner of the donor didn't make backup, and didn't told me that! (and he is my boss). Is it possible that operation has crashed the PCB?
Must i order a new hard drive or PCB or sand it to a specialist?

Thank you for your advises,

Bertrand Charrier

Best way is to send original drive with original PCB on it to DR pro.

It would have been better if you have not opened that drive.

I have not open this drive (the donor i mean, wich is finally the most important drive :-( ).
But i don't understand why the exchange of PCB has damaged it

You just described this, that is why I assumed you have opened a Patient drive.

Donor or Patient drive?

Very unlikely that PCB damaged your drive.

Thank you for your replies, and sorry the situation is hard to explain in English.
I mean i have opened the patient, but the most important data is on the donor.
And yes, i don't understand why the exchange of PCB has damage the donor...it never happended to me before.

more then likely the dead heads inside your patient killed your new pcb.

This is now far beyond DIY. If you want your data, I would suggest a PRO, but be prepared for the financial consequences of your DIY attempts.

I'm ready to pay because of my mistake, of course...and i have no choice.
But may be i can test with the same PCB (a new one) before sending the hard drive to a Pro?

I take this as, you found a donor, and that donor also had important data. You assumed changing the PCB would not kill the donors PCB, and now your important HDD that you were using as a donor is now ALSO dead.

1) Always back up.
2) if you are going to use a drive with data as a donor, clone that drive and forget it ever existed for the purpose of storing data after you use its parts for ANYTHING.

3) at this point it is really going to need to go to a pro, because you have 2 dead pcbs, and likely a dead preamp (hypothesis) on the "patient" drive.

What is going to have to be done is the donors board will need to be checked, if it has an EEPROM on U12 position, you are somewhat in luck, you can desolder this, and transfer it to a new matching board. This *should* fix your donor.

Next, to fix the original problem drive. It HAS to go to a cleanroom, it will likely need to have the original heads removed, the platter/s will now need to be cleaned (contamination) and then a new set of heads is going to need to be installed and "tuned".

Then it will need to be imaged and monitored carefully; because of the contamination there may be a need for even more then one set of heads.

I apologize if I sound "mean", but I am just giving you my honest professional opinion of this case so that you understand what you are up against.

Best Regards,

thank you for your reply.

So, i'll order a new PCB for trying to restore the donor data. At this time, no matter of the patient data.If it don't work, I'll send the drive to a Pro.
I'm agree with your advices...but today i forgotten them and make a mistake, i was too confident.

Thank you.

I am also fighting with a WD3200AAJS-40VWA1.
(Apple is a big fan of these...)
I have several 'similar' drives floating around.
One is an almost similar PCB (the numbers on the PCB sticker match up very very well) but it is from a 41VWA1, and I have several PCBs from 40VWA1 drives but there is less overlap in PCB sticker number.
Could someone spill the (or al least some) beans on what it is that has to match?
Thanks / harald

Adaptive info on new PCB has to match your original drive or otherwise transferred to a new PCB from original PCB. Could also be rebuilt, but with special equipment or/and experience.

The Marvell 88i6745 MCU has unique, drive specific "adaptive" data that need to be transferred to your donor PCB.

The following PCB supplier offers a free "PCB adaptation service":

I would also try gently cleaning the preamp contacts at J1 with a soft white pencil eraser.

The 88i6745-TFJ1 is afflicted by a fault that mimics bad heads. What problems are you experiencing with these drives?
