Guys ,
Had This Case with a Defective PCB .Got One Donor And Tried The HDD .Its Spinning But as Obvious Cannot Access anything And Knocks .Swapped The Patient PCB MCU on The Donor But Then There is No Activity .Possibly Patient MCU also Gone Kaput .I would Be Grateful If any Of you Could Send Me a BIOS That Makes My HDD Work So that i could Get Those Rom Generation Modules Out and Generate The ROM For This One .

Note : this is The G8 Hence i Think Its a Gekko .If Anyone Of You Can Help I Would Be Very Please Its a HDD From a Desperate Lady With Some Photos For a Court Case and I Have Exhausted All Possibility Of Doing anything Due To The BIOS .

OK Guys ,
Here it Goes .Got This Case With a Badly Damaged PCB .Although This Was Not The condition of This PCB when i Got It i Had To Remove Several Components From This .Initially i Assumed The MCU is OK .Here Have a Peek At this

Image

The PCb Had The following code embedded " 2060-701590-000 rev a " .I Am Also Adding a Picture Of Its Sticker With All Codes

Image

Well i then Ordered a Replacement Donor From My chinese Agent .I Received a Working PCB From Them With The Same embedded coding but the following sticker . I Assume It Was Not From the Same Family That is " WD5000AACS-00G8B1 " Gekko To Be Precise .The HDD Spinned Fine With this But Knocked .My Question Is That Should It Knock Or It Should Spin Up And Remain Like That ? .Cos If it did Spin Up and Remain Spinning then Only i could Read The Rom Generating Modules From this .Anyways i though might be i will try the patient mcu on this and hence i transferred the mcu to this .In that case the donor pcb became dead .I again had to remove this patient mcu from donor board and put the donor board mcu back .The pcb came back to life .I assume either the patient mcu is kaput or the rom in that is currupt .here is the photo of the donor 1 with mcu soldered back and its white sticker label

Donor 1 With MCU Reinstalled

Image

Donor 1 White Sticker Code

Image

Well Then i Though i will Program The Internal Rom In This donor 1 With Salvation Data Doctor .I Have No Idea If this Actually worked In SD Tool .what i did Was As Following .I Installed Three Jumpers in The WDC donor 1 pcb so that pcb comes to safe mode ,Selected Royle ,Low Speed And Tried To Program The Same .I Hope Infact i am sure i screwed it in this process and this donor 1 pcb again has a currupted bios .Then I Saw it had U12 Socket .I then Programmed a SST 25LF020A Serial 8 Pin EPROM and Installed It in The Socket And Installed 22 K Ohm Resistance To R36 " There Are Two R36 Pads Parallel To Each Other I Installed 2 22K Ohm Resistances To It .Firing Up this PCB did Not Yield any Results .I then Had the following Brand New HDD " WD10EADS-00L5B1 " .It Has The Same PCB No Though the Sticker Was Different Like The Donor 1 .Lets Call This PCb Donor 2 .The Donor 2 PCb started the hdd just fine but it knocked .I Then Installed 22 K Ohm Resistance "2 No " To This Donor 2 and Transferred external rom from donor 1 to donor 2 .This Too did Not Stop My Knocking .I Though Might Me The External Rom Is Not Working .To check That i Installed The donor 2 PCB With 2 Pull up Resistance + U12 External Rom To Its Own 1 Tera HDD And To My Horror The HDD Initialised fine .I am Now Assuming I Have Not Managed To Have the External Rom Work in Case of donor 1 And 2 .Is this due to the fact i have installed 2 Resistances on R36 As it had 2 pads .If I Had PC 3000 Portable Or UDMA Life Would Have Been So Easy Damn

Donor 2 Sticker

Image

Donor 2 With 2 22K Ohm Resistance and U12 Installed .

Mr.Amarbir I think there is a further damage to defective head/s or damaged Pre-amp after the fault of the patient PCB. Did you try to swap heads ?

above ROM was ( head map 4 )

this one is ( head map 3 heads )

I hope this work :

this for PCB ( 2060-701590-000 REV A ) without external ROM.

Good luck

ROM which Salvation reads in 192 kb find a pcb with same ROM read it with an external programmer it should be 256kb that will work for sure .

I can't offer an opinion on your procedure, but if your documentation calls for installing a 22K resistor at location R36, then you should leave the adjacent location vacant. AISI, there is only one R36, not two. The component to its left remains unidentified simply because there is no room on the PCB to do so.

The term "parallel" applies to two or more components that are connected to the same points in a circuit. R36 is adjacent to the other component, not parallel to it. Each is connected to a different MCU pin.

Code:
         parallel           series
           ___
       .--|___|--.         ___    ___
    o--|   ___   |--o  o--|___|--|___|--o
       '--|___|--'

If SD's tool is unable to read the full 256KB, then could you use a Vendor Specific Command to do it instead?

For example, there is an MHDD script entitled "WD Marvell Royl serial flash 192 read" here:
http://yura.projektas.lt/files/wd/mhdd/index.html

I would think that you could modify the above script by appending the following lines:

Code:
regs = $d5 $80 $bf $4f $c2 $a0 $b0
waitnbsy
checkdrq
sectorsto = 3rom3.bin

I would also expect that you would need to modify rom192.bin as follows:

0x 0000 24 00 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 04 00 00 00 00 00

You could then concatenate the four 64KB ROM segments as follows (in DOS/Windows):

copy /b 3rom0.bin + 3rom1.bin +3rom2.bin + 3rom3.bin rom_256K.bin

BTW, it would make more sense to rename the files as 4romx.bin.

Does not work this way there is another way to do this and it works perfect. Your way will corrupt the ROM on this. Sorry. Try again

Huh?

The above script reads the ROM, it doesn't write it. No risk there ...

Rameez ,
You Mean To Tell Me that ACe + Sd When they Both Read and Save ROM its Not a 1:1 Dump of The Whole Rom Inside The MCU ? .Well Might Be You Are Right Here Or Might Be The Rest Code Has To Be Just "FF" .I Was Speaking To One Senior In Our Field who Had UDMA And He Said That He Always Copies ROM + Rom Modules .I Asked Him That If You Just Copy Rom Whats The Use Of ROM Modules And They Are Part Of ROM .To this He Said The ROM Is At a Different Place and The ROM Modules Are In the Kernel .Hummmmmm i Could Not Get This .Also In the PCB the ROM is In The MCU Not In Any U12 Serial EPROM .How Can i Get a 256 KB File .This Case is Getting Very Interesting LOL .

Ann ,
As you Know i Do Not Have UDMA ,though Portable is Coming For sure .Assuming you Just Jave a Specific PCB Of WD Royl HDD .Is It Possible To Read / Write ROM In that .Seniors Wight Be Thinking What Kind Of a Question is This ? .Well In UDMA Its Easy Install The Safe Mode Jumpers ,Put The PCB To UDMA .Select The Drive Family And Read / Write the ROM .I Have Never Managed this In Sd tools .Well if the HDD Has started and Partial Initialisation is Done .Then Its Possible Etc Etc .But Mostly It Currupts The ROM .In My Case I Have Installed the Pullup Resistance R36 of 22K Ohm And I Have Programmed The ROM SST that i had handy with the Roms that i was getting from all you people .but the boot process does not happen from the external rom i think it always starts from internal rom and that has a corrupt rom imho . Please Shed Some Light Here .

Friend only way to get 256kb ROM is to find a pcb with external ROM and copy that ROM with a programmer .
