Hi Gurus,

I really need some help or guidance please, I borrowed a 2TB media player off of a mate and inadvertently used the wrong charger for it, now it wont power up :( I've removed the HDD from it (Samsung HD204UI) and the hard drive doesn't spin at all, my question is.. Will I be able to just replace the pcb (kinda plug and play) or will it be far more techy than this?
I'd appreciate any help from anybody :) thanks in advance

Post a clear picture of the PCB.

Probably just blown TVS and/or fuse.

I have done exactly the same thing with my 2TB Samsung G3 with the same hard drive HD204UI. Plugged in a 24v adaptor instead of the 12v

in your photo, the two black square components at the top of the photo near the SATA/power pins, well the left component has clearly died, and the soldering has almost burnt out.

Nothing else in the board looks like it has failed. Have just received a replacement PCB from donordrives and it too will not spin up. Is it worth trying to swap the burnt component across from the new board to the old (withing my soldering capabilities), or send both PCBs and drive back to donordrives to be repaired, fixed, etc?

As I had just transferred everything over to this drive and wiped the drive in my pc.... am keen on restoring as much as possible.
Have taken photo on mobile, waiting for google to actually deliver it to my hotmail so i can download/upload to here

the left diode is caput (reads zero/shorts), the diode on the right doesn't register anything in either direction (assumed open, continues to read 1),... though on the PCB received from donordrives both diodes indicate around 900 in the registering direction

Did someone tell you that depending on what happened replacing the PCB is useless and also you can fry the new PCB too ? This kind of diag should be carried out IN ADVANCE.

Hi,
I've resolved this issue now thanks to DonorDrives..

I sent the HDD to them, purchased a new pcb from them with a free 'swapservice' which entailed removing items from my pcb and putting them on the purchased one..

Result - Everything works, no data lost and only cost around £60 including return postage !!

Seriously I can't thank the guys at Donor Drives enough, top quality service and really speedy turnaround - :D :D

Normally all you would need to do would be to remove the shorted 12V TVS diode and then flow a blob of solder over the zero-ohm resistor/link.

See http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/HDD/HD204UI_TVS.jpg

Hello
I am new to the forum, thanks for the advice you give to people.

I am having trouble with my HD204UI SAMSUNG DRIVE. It does not spin. I tried swaping the PCB with the one from my HD154UI and it spinned but gave tickling noise.

I checked the diodes with a multimeter and they seem to work fine, I get 0.5 ohm using the diode tester on both.
The resistor is short circuited, 0 ohms.

Can you offer any advice?

Thanks in any case

Ritual

They are not working fine.
The values you got indicate that these diodes (TVS ) have failed.

this is correct value

You can get more information about TVS if you search this forum.

Anyhow , you can remove these Diodes (carefully desolder them with proper tools)as they are for protection , and as such not necessary for the functioning of the Drive.
BUT be careful, the power supply you use should be proper and reliable.Else you may spoil the circuit board without the protection of the TVS diodes.
If you are lucky, then only these diodes will be faulty and you can get your data back like fzabkar said.
good luck

I thought so, too, at first, but I think "ritual" is referring to a reading of .500 on the diode range of the multimeter, in which case this would be OK for a forward biased diode.

Is this your board?
http://www.storagereview.com/images/sam ... cb-top.jpg

If so, then there are several voltage test points you could measure.

Measure the voltages at each of the 4R7 coils at the ends furthest from the motor controller IC (SH6125B). These will be the Vcore and Vio supplies for the MCU, SDRAM, and flash memory (the 8-pin IC above the SDRAM).

Also measure the voltage at the right hand end of the diode immediately to the right of the 1R2 coil. This will be the -5V supply for the preamp.

Of course you would first need to confirm that +5V and +12V are present at the TVS diodes.

This thread may be helpful:
samsung-spinpoint-hd753lj-again-any-advice-t22666.html

If you need to replace your PCB, you may need to transfer the flash memory IC, or its contents, from patient to donor. Donordrives.com should be able to advise you if this is necessary.

@ fzabkar
You are right there. I got it wrong. ( by the 0.5 ohm reading got by op ).
sorry .
