Thanks fzabkar for all your help. I will look into your suggestions. BTW, I can seem to turn this board on. Ive read something a few posts above me that the person should try to short the eeprom by "connect power, short, press button" or "short, connect power, press button". Question is...which is the eeprom on my board? I know total noob question so please forgive me.

ISTM that you probably wouldn't be comfortable "interfering" with the flash memory chip (aka EEPROM). The reason you would short certain pins would be to force the bridge to go into a default unprogrammed mode. In this state it may identify itself to the USB host with Symwave's Product ID and Vendor ID rather than as a WD My Book. This would prove whether the USB connection is intact or otherwise. For example, your third party enclosure identifies itself as a JMicron. JMicron is the manufacturer of the bridge IC.

Hi

I have a MyBook Essential 2TB (adapter model) experiencing the same problem , bridge board failed with "HARDWARE ERROR" message in WINDOWS and LED blinking , data is encrypted .

when I disable the firmware FLASH IC , the board switches to pure USB-to-SATA mode ,shows that everything else in the board is OK ,so it seems that the error is related to firmware and flash IC.

Trying to reflash the firmware via firmware update procedure in WD site failed and the updater utility indicates that the firmware is up-to-date.

Is it possible to reflash the firmware manually , and dose it help in recovering the board ?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi. I have a problem with My Book Essential 2TB. The drive is USB 2.0, about five years old. Never had any problems before. About a week, two ago USB connector broke. So I ordered the same board 4061-705059-001 Rev. AG and it came yesterday. I switched it but the drive does not get recognized. The light is on all the time, but it does not blink. Drive starts to spin and after 5 or something seconds it stops. Can someone help? And maybe know what's the problem. Thx

Connect the drive directly to a SATA port on your motherboard. Does it appear in BIOS?

AIUI, spin down usually points to an internal fault. Did you drop the drive or bump it while it was spinning?

I presume that it still spins down?

Other than cleaning the HDA contacts, I don't know what else you could do.

Should cleaning be done just on the open side of the PCB which is visible, or should i remove it from the drive and clean it on the inside?
