Hi, I need your help to understand something.

I've seen that when you want to replace a part of a hard disk, you have to take exactly the same disk. Why do you need to take the exact same drive? Let's say that I have a WD that doesn't work anymore and that I want to transfer the disks, why can't we do it on an IBM for example. If the receiving disk has the same number of disks as the original one and we transfer the PCB.

I'm not talking about how to open the disk. That's something else.

Thank you for your information

Why do so many people labour under the misapprehension that to recover a drive the discs need to be transferred?

Firstly, it’s extremely rare that this needs be done. Pretty much only in the event that the spindle motor is bad.

That aside, in answer to your question.... If you did, for whatever reason, want to transfer the platters into a chassis, it’s not as simple as that. For example you’d also need to transfer (or replace if bad) the heads assembly, magnets, dampers if present and of course the PCB. All of which almost certainly wouldn’t fit in the chassis due to design differences.

Some drives are more sensitive to platter alignment than others because of the way the way the servo is recorded in the factory and the way their servo firmware works.

I don't know about you, but your question is stupid. Find somebody to explain you why.

I don't find it stupid, we all had to ask those questions years ago. Somebody finds the answers himself, others ask others...
But i did not see Sean's reply at the time i started to reply ...

yes, it is a bit ambiguous, first i also thought he's asking why we can't read a disk from WD in an IBM housing (that's a stupid idea indeed coz there are easier methods) but i think it's not about that. Or?

ISTM that the OP is under the misapprehension that HDD discs are standardised in the same way as optical discs, etc. One can play an optical disc in almost any optical drive from any manufacturer, so why can't we do the same with HDD platters? I think that's the crux of the question. If one thinks of it in those terms, then it doesn't sound stupid.

I was told the only stupid question was the one that should have been asked, however, was not asked -- before having embarked upon an adventure that ended less than ideal.
