Hello.

Hard drive is no longer recognized.
After being plugged in, spin up is 'clicky', drive does a buzz-blatt noise 5 times over 20 seconds, then stops.
Nothing in dmesg to indicate the drive is being recognized in any way.

I'm assuming the noise is an indication of bad mechanics.
Any chance it's a bad controller?

Hi,

There is a chance that is bad PCB, but it's a slight one.
You can get another PCB and swap ROM just to be sure, but I'm 99% sure it's heads related.

Clicking and buzzing sounds coming from the hard drive when being powered on, including the case when it's not being (properly) recognized, usually means that it's damaged, dead or dying.
This could happen either to physical (external) damage, e.g. being dropped, hit, spilled over etc.; or internal errors like bad sectors; also electrical failure etc.
If your drive's completely gone, it won't even show up in BIOS. If it's shown in the BIOS, it should be also shown in the OS in My Computer, Device Management, Drive Manager, Devices and Printers. Does it show up in BIOS at least?
To be sure if it's your HDD that's making the noise or not, try it on another computer to see if it works there.

I've been carrying this drive in my notebook bag for some time, so it has received an abnormal amount of abuse.
I'm not surprised it's no longer working. Annoyed, but not surprised.
No bios recognition across multiple computers, no OS recognition across different flavors of linux and windows.
I think it's time to have a look at the heads and the platters.

It is likely stuck heads, at the very least. This usually included damaged heads and platter surfaces. I don't recommend you open the drive unless you are 100% sure that you have no intention of seeking professional assistance.

I would better agree with @Icoughey, it's not a good idea to open the hard drive. The least, if it's still in warranty, you'll void it. If it's the information you'd like to save, I would better suggest using professional help for that, like data recovery company, it's the best option.
