Hi,

I have Hitachi - HTS725032A9A360. 320GB.

Work ok in Toshiba LapTop and stop suddenly.

Sound (Click)... stop and then Sound (Click lower) again, stop ... repeat ...

I can't access the disk in BIOS ... no SMART info.

Please help diagnose the problem.

Thanks in advance,

Ruy

Physical issues, e.g. Read/write heads.

Requires parts, cleanroom and a skilled technician.

The more you let it click away, the less chance of recovery.

Not DIY :-(

Thank you.

Yes scratch the surface.

For this model is the only way?

Does the disk (a) "works" or (b)"worked" in Toshiba laptop?
If answer is (a), what do you mean by "works ok" ; that the drive is only spinning?

From the BIOS of the laptop or from the BIOS of another computer that the disk was connected to?

(...) no SMART info.

Some hard drives won't print SMART info, even when they work perfectly. Typically Hitachi laptop hard drives won't print SMART info when you're testing them with HDTune.

Sometimes are many bad sectors in some area and the spindle can click even if most bytes remain accessible and can be cloned and the data recovered afterward. It's true however that letting the spindle click many times may further damage the hard drive ; so if you're trying to clone the drive you must stay close to it, so that you can quickly stop the cloning as soon as you hear the clicks and consequently try cloning another area.
If the DOS let you access the folder structure, another strategy is to directly copy the most needed folders first. Then, I would suggest cloning as soon as possible if you can.

Not necessarily. It depends on the nature of the problem as well as how much does a hardware repair cost as compared to the value of your data. For clicking drives, cleanroom is often the only (and most expensive) solution, especially if the "noise pattern" is repetitive. But some drives can click at some point for another reason.
Did you already try listing the drive in console mode with a Linux boot CD or Linux live USB?

I agree. However, it is sometimes possible to save most of the data of even if the spindle clicks strongly when the drive tries to read some areas.

How does the OP know that "yes scratche the surface" was it opened in a cleanroom, or guessing
