"Zone Formula" ?

Does anyone know what a "Zone Formula" is ?
For example, using HRT on a Quantum drive i can get the "zone formula" by reading CP 10 and then add that "zone formula" to the ini file if it's not there already, but what is the zone forumula and what is the use of it ?
