Hi guys, i have this HDD:

Toshiba 250GB SATA MK2555GSX, HDD2H24 E UL01 T

The PCB burned and i replace it with another one, EXACTLY THE SAME MODEL.

Toshiba drives have unique information to each of their drives on their boards, so a simple board swap will not work.

I Know This, infact, besides change the PCB, i transfered "IC602" from the original board to the donor.

RESULT: NOTHING.

The HDD doesn't spin up.

What i have to do? :( :?:

I have bought the PCB from here:

http://www.hdd-parts.com/14032117.html

These are the photos of the OLD PCB

As soon as i'll put the images of the new PCB.

P.S. Sorry for my "english".

I found this similar case:

http://www.deadharddrive.com/forums/vie ... hp?p=10451

The guy says that he has transfered the "IC602" but for spin up the HDD he bypassed the "S" fuse and got the drive spinning again.

From the page:

I've taken a look at the PCB to see if I could figure out what's wrong. I bypassed the "S" fuse and got the drive spinning again

What's this fuse? Where's the fuse? Maybe is this near the sata connector?

I only found this:

Image

AND ESPECIALLY HOW I BYPASS THE FUSE? What it means to "bypass the fuse"?
I never done these things.

Be patient with me guys, i need help!

The "S" device is the fuse. You shouldn't bypass it without first determining that there are no other problems. In any case you've swapped the board and transferred the firmware, so the drive appears to have other problems. That's assuming that IC602 was transferred correctly and that its code is intact.

Let's see the photo of the new PCB. If you have a multimeter, we can take some measurements on your old PCB.

Yes, I agree with fzabkar.

What made you think it was the PCB in the first place? What were the original symptoms? This is all good stuff to ask first before you start messing around, as you may have now further complicated the situation.

PCB's are compatible. Looks like problem with ROM content or ROM IC (if donor PCB is OK). Sometime, ROM content get damage when you unsold IC (for example, zeros allover address range).
Check ROM content by reading on the programmer device.

But the PCB that i bought is new. I don't think that it has problems.

If you already replace PCB + ROM either pre-amp is shorted or ROM is damaged.

Did you test donor PCB without ROM swap ? If so did the drive spin ?

What's this PRE-AMP? How i see if it's damaged? And how i can see if it's ok?

No, i didn't test the HDD before ROM swap cuz i know that's useless try it if i haven't done the swap.

What's this ROM IC? "IC" what does it mean?

How i check the ROM content? I can't do these things. For these things i go to my repair shop.

Help!

@seabroke, are you saying that your local repair shop did the ROM swap, not hdd-parts.com? If so, can we see a photo of their work? Does the photo of your original board reflect its state before the swap?

Thaks guys for the replies.

Here you are the photos, the new PCB's photos:

P.S. 1st difference with the OLD PCB (as you can see in the images that i posted above): Here there's written:

MDK 339V-O n (NEW PCB) hannstar JMV-6 94V-D (OLD PCB)

What's this CODE?

NEW PCB:

OLD PCB

Different CODE, what's this other one? (You can see it in the 4th image i posted)

NEW PCB:

This is the CHIP controller "0919"

OLD PCB
"0920"

Is this a problem? EQUAL Chip controller but with this lil difference.

Now, the work related the ROM Swap:

OLD PCB with the "IC602" removed

NEW PCB with the ROM Swapped:

Ok guys, i wait your replies.

The soldering work looks good. However, I was hoping to see whether the chip was installed the right way around. The photo is too dark to be sure.

The 0919 and 0920 numbers are just YYWW (Year / Week) date codes, so they are not important. For example, 0920 is indicating that the chip was manufactured during the 20th week of 2009. I don't know about the other markings, but ISTM that the differences are probably irrelevant.

Do you hear any sound at all if you press your ear against the cover of the drive?

Could be that the photo is too dark, but it seems that IC602 has lost all its markings.

Before it was clearly visible which pin was marked as pin 1 and also had "MX" etc... printed on it.

Are you 100% sure it's the same (correct) chip?

Let's hope that's the case, and the guy that did the chip swap didn't mix the chips up. :-(

No, nothing.

Yeah, it's the same chip, why should it be another chip?

And yes, you're right, the chip has lost all its marking but I DON'T KNOW WHY. Is this a problem?

Something is very wrong. :-(

Did a data recovery company perform the chip swap? If so, did they quote you for a data recovery?

Do you have the original chip from the donor PCB? If so, is it damaged? Is it possible that they damaged your original chip, substituted a different chip, and then tried to cover it up by scraping off its markings??? Does the chip get hot?

Do you have a multimeter?

what i cant understand, why is the OP all the way from the beginning ignoring a simple question: "who made the swap" ?

Then he must have cooked the chip so badly that he blew the markings off. Wow.
