WD Passport: Repair/exchange fried usb port

Hi there,

I have a Western Digital WD Passport USB 3.0 WD10JMVW 1TB , MDL: WD10JMVW-11S5XS0 , PCB board number: 2060-771801-002 REV A

After analysis I'm 95 percent sure that the USB port and/or controller is fried up and the HDD should work properly... any chance to repair it without swapping PCB board?

what was involved in the analysis and how did you come to the conclusion? not viable accessing through those headers. changing PCB if you are correct is the logical way, but would certainly include other requirements, and might not be a simple DIY.

a picture of the PCB would likely to be helpful to the more experienced HDD guys

First of all there was an old PC device that maybe had to high power on the USB and fried up some USB sticks, my Galaxy S4 (USB port was changed to fix it) and obviously also this HDD...

I can tell as by plugging the disk to the USB port still gets power connected, LED is lighting up, disk is spinning normally, no strange noises no clicking or anything similar and disk never fell down anyway so hardware damage to disk is almost impossible. If the PCB would be fried, then the disk shouldn't spin up at all at least as much as I understand so there is only the USB port/controller left...

As for the PCB picture: I already posted the link above, but to facilitate I put it here directly.

It's the same board and as there is no physical damage visible it makes no difference I guess

Those pins, is there any possibility to get access to the disk through them?

Those pins will only give access to the ROM chip on the PCB using advance data recovery tools. They don't have any other function and no use to you.

Im almost sure the PCB is ok in your case and the problem lies elsewhere. My bet is on firmware.

First you can't work with a damaged drive through a USB interface so you need to swap the PCB for the SATA version of this board.
Here is the number for the SATA PCB "2060-771823-000".
Then you need to move the ROM (U12 Chip) from the original board to the new board.

If you re not confident in doing this then i suggest you send it away for professional data recovery.

I agree, most likely nothing to do with the PCB or USB port. It's most like firmware related. Swapping for a SATA board might get you sector access so you can clone it using a tool like ddresuce (maybe), but chances are about 95% that the data is encrypted by the USB bridge, so you'll still be stuck.

Best bet is to have a pro look at it. Probably will only cost a few hundred bucks at this point, but the more it's messed with and powered on/off the worse it'll get.

i agree too, PCB is not the problem.
firmware/bad sector or 1 of the head is the problem.

changing pcb to sata will not solve the problem as data-medics mentioned rightly you still need to solve the encryption.

if data is important send it to a pro for estimated cost after that you can decide whether or not you want to try DIY or not.

PCB 2060 771801 002 REV A
Had user password. Also usb bridge encrypted drive I know
Need 771823 PCB. But not in my hand.
Drive working normal. No clicking sounds. In Windows capacity look 1 tb. When trying to look in drive with hex or trying to make something in disk manager Says drive write protected. Not show smart info also.

I have WD10JMVW - .... more sata and usb drive for donor. Unfortunately no one same . (771959 771960 61 ).

I tried to read ROM by wire to a SATA connector. (Removed capacitors) couldn't read rom. Cannot see drive ID etc and user data. At the end I removed rom chip and I have readed ROM.

Any suggestion? Is there any way to recover data? I am using MRT.
I had solved same issue a 3.5" my book. But There was triangle PCB board. Removed that board. Used sata connection.
I have read Linux solutions. But never used linux before and not installed my computer.
