In place BIOS chip programmer for HM161GI board

January 28th, 2017, 14:21

Hi,

I'm looking for help choosing the right kind of programmer for in-place programming the BIOS chip on PCB of number: BF41-00306A 00.

This is the board:

Also wondering if this approach is reliable. I prefer it to moving the bios chip as there isnt the risk of damaging the chip that way, but I have heard that sometimes it doesn't work.

Thanks,
Dale.

At this point I am not sure if it is mechanical or the board. Im just thinking to try a board repair first then later take to a data recovery centre if it doesnt work.

I dont know what a terminal LOG is and so far cant find anything about on it on the web.

The drive causes POST and shutdowns to take longer than usual, but isnt recognised in Windows Disk Management. It spins up when first connected and makes a couple of faint beeps and some normal sounding mechanical noises (like the heads moving around maybe, nothing nasty sounding), then spins down after about 20 seconds.

All websites which sell the board so far have said a bios swap is a must if you dont know the firmware, which I dont in this case because its not written anywhere on the drive . Apparently this is often the case with this drive.

First of all get a TTL adaptor like this - http://www.hddoracle.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=192

Would this likely work with that drive:

My mistake, its one beep, and it comes just as it shuts down. It sounds electronic to my ears rather than mechanical.

A serial port output log should provide a wealth of knowledge as to what's happening :-)

I have received the TLL adapter above. It has a CH340G chip.

Could someone walk me through how to get and output log using terminal software? I have tried installing various drivers using the device ID in device manager (USB\VID_067B&PID_2303&REV_0300)
but the device is 'failing to start', and nothing happens in the 'HDD Serial Commander' terminal screen when I connect it.

Im using windows 10.

If possible, I would try the adapter with an earlier version of Windows. Perform a loopback test by connect the adapter's Tx and Rx pins together, then type into a terminal program (eg HyperTerminal) and ensure that each character is echoed correctly.

Same problem with Windows 7. Cant get it to install.

Can someone recommend a driver for it, or another serial adapter like it which will work with the drive?
