Hello to all hddguru members

im a new member to this forum

i have WD my passport 1TB portable HDD which Accidentally has dropped from my desk and suddenly when tried to to connect
to my laptop it wasn't able to connect and laptop can't recognize it

I decided to send it to ontrack recovery center and after paying evaluation fee i sent the portable HDD to them
so after 3 weeks i sent an email to ontrack asking them about latest news, then they told me that they were unable to get image
of HDD due to physical media damage on surface of HDD platters in critical areas and all attempt to bypass the damage were unsuccessful and the damage is too widespread

So they closed the case and i asked them if they can provide me with some images about surface of HDD platters but they
told me that they dont send images of internal parts of HDD

i really shocked from this bad news and become upset because this HDD contains thousands of files and folders for work
and for years before

Please need your suggestion and help , is there any chance to recover this HDD even if it is a difficult case to be handled

Your suggestions and help are really appreciated

As we know, Ontrack is reliable. You may try with hope to others.

Thank you very much friends for your suggestions and very appreciated

The problem is that i don't know what happened exactly to HDD platters or heads and i don't have any idea only few searching in the internet for such issue which reveal a complicated case of recovery due to scratching of surface of platters and i assume it is not PCB but mechanical issue (due to HDD fell down on earth) leads to destroying of magnetic surface of platter (if i'm not wrong) and need to be disassemble in a Clean room with pro tools and experience for such situations
My huge Concern after being inspected by a know company and being not able to recover even a single file (leads me to suspect)
In fact im searching for Full structure Recovery not a raw recovery , the reason is that multiple files have same names but distributed into folders and projects
Im very sad because actually contents are educational belongs to secondary students and their works and works of teachers (i know i should make backup but with very huge works and left out with no enough time and no help to do backup job, this is the reason why i couldn't make a backup)

This is why i am searching for help from a HDD Recovery Pro (who can handle damaged Platters) and afraid to give to someone who will cause more destroy to HDD and make things worse and chances of recovery will decreased (please understand my fears)

All DR companies who charge evaluation fees and don't provide pictures (in case if they mention scratches) in final reports , are not trusted at all.

Thank you my friend DR-Kiev,
Actually at that time i decided to send my HD to ontrack based on that it is mentioned in WD website as an authorized DR for WD products , and its a well known DR everywhere, Really I asked them to provide me with images of HDD platters so i can see how much damage but unfortunately they told me that they don't send such images

If the drive is still there, I would suggest to call Ontrack once again and insist on getting cleanroom platter photos. Maybe call someone else (not the number you've been given) or contact them on social networks.
Photos would be helpful to estimate whether it's possible to do something or the data is lost completely.

We work with physically damaged hard drives and have been successfully recovering HDDs rejected by major DR companies, so may be able to help with this recovery as well.

Here's some photos of the drives we have recovered in the past (those drives aren't somehow special or chosen, just a couple of jobs we've finished back then):

You could make contact with member jono-ats. His company, Datasavers, is also a WD approved partner.

In this case result are pretty good. Almost 99% recovered, but hard to predict on this kind of cases. If this result is good it doesn't mean in your case it will be similar.

maths366, have you been able to verify the recovered files by using programs that normally read from/write to those files -- making sure what was recovered is actually usable?
