ST3500410AS P/N: 9SL142-303 Firmware: CC46 Date Code: 11284

Found CC49 update on Seagate's site despite their serial number search claiming there's no field update for it, not that there is no update. Should I use it or not?

Here is the configuration matrix that determines if your firmware qualifies for an update:

that's not right for firmware update.. specially seagate..

if you don't update mb bios, your new cpu, some graphic card or ram doesn't work..
if you don't update 7200.11 in health time you 'll waste your extra time.

Most (?) HDD firmware updates are issued to address problems rather than to implement new features. Samsung's NCQ / Identify Device bug is another example.

That said, Seagate seems to provide this information to its OEMs but not to its end users, so we are left to wonder what their updates actually do.

I have a Seagate 'green' 1TB drive pulled from an HP Pavilion p6340f. HP has a firmware update listed for it that fixes a problem where it may sometimes not actually write data. That one I made sure to update.

A CD-RW disc gets plenty of use for these updates that come as tiny bootable ISO files. No need to waste a CD-R.

I would recommend switching to anything but Seagate...
