Hi,

I have a WD My Book Essentials 1tb with a - 4060-705089-001 REV.P1 SATA-USB Bridge.
It was not powering on at all & i found the culprit to be the U6 Mosfet,
so i removed it & bridged "Drain1" and "Source1" pads & "Drain2" and "Source2" pads.

The HDD now powers on & spins, but no device is detected when connected to computer & LED on PCB does not light up at all.
There is no visible damage to any of the traces, components or USB connector & cable is good...
The HDD on it's own connected via SATA detects drive fine, but obviously cannot access any data as there is encryption.

Any advice to point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated !

The data is not showing due to hardware encryption by design. Connect back to the USB bridge, source another compatible one, or send to a pro to decrypt with advanced software.

Yes i am aware that there is encryption. If you read my post fully, i am trying to repair the SATA-USB bridge PCB, first & if it is not feasible to repair it then i will source a matching bridge.

I have a rework station & skills to solder any component on the PCB, it's just the troubleshooting is a bit difficult without any schematic. Which is why i was asking if anyone may have some advice based on my original post as to head me in the right direction.

I read your post fully. Confirmed your findings and suggested some solutions.

There is no schematic available, unless someone is willing to record some voltage point tests and provide that info to you. Most likely no one will bother (except maybe fzabkar, who will ask you to post a picture, take out your multimeter and run some tests for him to try figure something out).

As far as your repair so far, maybe it is good, maybe not. Not easily verifiable.
It is possible that the bridge currently functions correctly, but the drive itself may have some issue as well (maybe firmware got corrupt, or some of the volume data got corrupt). Do you have tools to verify the drive is healthy?

Lacking advanced tools, the best course of action.with the least headache is to source a working compatible bridge and work your way from there.

Measure the voltages at L1 and L2. These will be the Vcore and Vio supplies for the bridge IC.

Both Inductors, (at L1 & L2) read 0v. L10 measures 5v. L12 measures 0v
The Buck Converter at U5 measures
5v on Pin1
12v on Pin2,
5v on Pin3
0v on Pin4
0.9v on Pin5 is
1.8v on Pin6
4.15v on Pin7
3.6v on Pin8

I also replaced the APM4532 dual switching Fet , at U6 with a new one.

I believe that L1, L12 and the adjacent 5-pin buck converter constitute a 2.5V or 3.3V Vio supply for the bridge. The Vcore PWM control comes from within the bridge, so it requires Vio to come up first.

I believe that the 5-pin IC is your culprit. There was a recent post where someone replaced one of these with a different chip (because it was easier to find).

U5 and L10 constitute the +5V supply. Obviously it is working.

I presume your talking about the IC next to L1 as it is the only 5 pin IC on the PCB...
You couldn't tell me what the component is, so i can try to find a replacement one.
I have a whole lot of dead Macbook Pro boards with Schematics & Boardview files for them,
so i may be able to harvest one or an equivalent.

I would test for a short circuit to ground at the coil's output, just to exclude the load as a possible culprit.
