Does the dock report the same 104.9MB capacity on its own, without the drive installed?

For 6 months I've been using the Inateck FD2002 on an early 2008 Mac Pro (MacPro3,1) running El Capitan (10.11.2) and I've noticed that if I turn on the dock with no external drive inserted into the dock I will get an error "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer", with the choices: Initialize, Ignore, Eject:
If I select Eject and I insert a drive, the external drive will spin up but it will not mount so I'm unable to access it.
If I select Ignore and I insert a drive then the external drive will spin up and I can access it normally.
If I select Initialize, then the OSX Disk Utility will open automatically and it sees the attached FD2002 as having some uninitialized storage space "ASMT109x - Config Media" 104.9MB Uninitialized.

I need glasses! If the first post mentioned the HD was not spinning -- I totally missed it. I was focused primarily on the data recovery question as given in the title.RolandJS wrote:Did you try a Puppy Linux usb or dvd boot? What did its file manager report? I was going to recommend cloning - however, at this point, it might be impossible to do.
