Hi I have a dead hard drive, and i need the data off of it.

Here is the story…

i bought a G-Technology 4TB G-DRIVE Thunderbolt USB 3.0 Hard Drive

It stoped working randomly. I would turn the unit on and no fan, no power up… nothing…

So i opened it up. Inside was a
HGST Ultrastar 7K6000 4 TB Internal HD ‑ SATA ‑ 4" ‑ 7,200

I bought the OWC Drive Dock.

Now when i try to mount that the following happens.

"The Disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"

When i go to disk utility I don’t see my mounted drive… only a config media listed under external. with a capacity of only 104.9 MB

First Aid Passes, but doesn’t do anything.
I can’t mount, or anything.

I’ve downloaded Disk Warrior and other disk restore programs… all with 0 success.

What is my next step?

Here is my Mac.
iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015)
4 GHz Intel Core i7
32 GB 1867 MHz DDR3
AMD Radeon R9 M395X 4096 MB

Does the drive spin up?

Does the dock report the same 104.9MB capacity on its own, without the drive installed?

Did you try a Puppy Linux usb or dvd boot? What did its file manager report?
I was going to recommend cloning - however, at this point, it might be impossible to do.

it does not spin when connected... and when the drive is not connected no info is shown as far as disk size

Hi, put the drive into the dock and power it up.
When it's recognized open terminal and write diskutil list....take a screeenshot and post it here.

Obviously, not everyone actually reads what you say before they throw their 2 cents in there. If the drive's not spinning, then you're clearly going to need the assistance of a professional lab. Tying to diagnose a hardware issue like that using only software is an exercise in futility.

If it is a PCB problem, as it appears to be, then you could try a PCB plus firmware transfer for around US$50.

If you could upload a detailed photo of the component side of the PCB, I could help you to narrow down the problem. It may be as simple as a shorted TVS diode, in which case a DIY fix may cost you nothing.

FD2002 Mac OSX El Capitan Drive Dock Error - ASMT109x:
http://www.inateck.com/forums/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=499

Quote:
For 6 months I've been using the Inateck FD2002 on an early 2008 Mac Pro (MacPro3,1) running El Capitan (10.11.2) and I've noticed that if I turn on the dock with no external drive inserted into the dock I will get an error "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer", with the choices: Initialize, Ignore, Eject:

If I select Eject and I insert a drive, the external drive will spin up but it will not mount so I'm unable to access it.

If I select Ignore and I insert a drive then the external drive will spin up and I can access it normally.

If I select Initialize, then the OSX Disk Utility will open automatically and it sees the attached FD2002 as having some uninitialized storage space "ASMT109x - Config Media" 104.9MB Uninitialized.

I need glasses! If the first post mentioned the HD was not spinning -- I totally missed it. I was focused primarily on the data recovery question as given in the title.
