Toshiba MQ01UBD100 (1TB USB 3) not detected but spins

Hello to all,
I’ve been reading over the forums, but I didn't find similar symptoms as my drive.

This is the drive:
Model: MQ01UBD100
HDD Code: HDKBD29AYA31 T
Firmware: AB00/AX101U
PCB Revision: G3448A

Symptoms: The drive spins but the SO doesn't detect it. In particular on linux machine if I do "dmesg" on terminal I get:

I tried to change USB 3.0 cable and also with an USB 2.0 cable, but it's the same.
I've thinked to buy another PCB but it's the first time doing anything like this and I just wanted to make sure that what I've in mind it's actually possible. Thanks, any help would be appreciated!

Find a compatible SATA PCB and transfer ROM's(IC602) then connect it directly via SATA interface.

Agree, that'll certainly make diagnosis easier. But it will almost certainly have other issues, media issues for sure and possibly damaged G-list.

Convert to SATA first and try to clone it with something like hddsuperclone (or whatever it's called, I don't use it) or ddrescue or media tools.

If that works then great, otherwise you'll need pro assistance which shouldn't be expensive AT THIS STAGE if it's not tampered about with too much.

On this post "http://forum.hddguru.com/viewtopic.php?p=178267#p178267" I found this solution to convert USB to SATA.
There are 4 capacitors and 2 parallel Tx/Rx traces at about 2 o'clock to the bridge IC, above the "IC607" circuit reference (DSC03837.JPG). If you would like to convert your PCB to SATA mode, then remove these capacitors and wire your SATA cable to the MCU side.

Can I apply that solution on my PCB?

Otherwise I found like compatible SATA PCB, this: G003235C.

In order, from top to bottom of image:
0.49V~0.51V,
4.87V~4.96V,
3.60V~3.68V
(Measured with two different tester).

If the voltages are OK, try to invalidate the bridge firmware by shorting the Data Out pin to ground while you apply power to the PCB. If the VL711S bridge is alive, it should then revert to reporting VIA's Product and Vendor IDs via USB rather than Toshiba's.

Edit: Sorry, I just saw your latest post. Don't bother with this test.

ISTM that the bridge IC (VL711S) is faulty. Its internal LDO regulator should produce +3.3V from the 5V input. Also, its internal DC-DC converter should be producing +1.2V via the external inductor and capacitor (below and above my Vcore rectangle). Measure the voltage on the bridge side of the inductor. Also measure the resistance of the inductor (with power off), and the resistance of the capacitor (between Vcore and ground). It may be an idea to reflow the solder joints at the inductor and/or capacitor.

The voltage on the bridge side of the inductor is 0.49V, the resistance of the inductor is 3.4Ohm, instead none continuity between Vcore and ground.

Assuming your measurements have been done correctly, then ISTM that the bridge IC is dead. If you are unable to transfer IC602 to your donor, then PCB suppliers such as hdd-parts.com will do it for free. Good luck.

I hope so, unless my testers are to throw :)

In fact, I do not have the tools needed to transfer the IC and I've seen on that site, but there is only the SATA version, is it okay to take that one anyway?

I'm not a DR professional, but when assessing compatibility, you need to match the MCU and motor controller ICs, AIUI.

Here is a pinout diagram for the VL711:

I would measure the voltage pins - 10, 12, 13, 16, 24, 27, 33, 34, 37-40. I would probe the external components rather than the IC's pins (less risk of shorts).

Pin 41 (RESET_) should be high in normal operation. If Vcore is below 0.9V, then the internal reset logic pulls this pin low. This pin can also be connected to an external reset generator. The 4-pin IC near pin #1 of the bridge could be a reset supervisor. I would measure the reset pin (41).

You may not be, but surely you are more experienced than me :wink:
Already finding the component, though hypothetically, gives me some satisfaction, because in the end I'm honest, I don't care about the data of the HD, but I just want to know why it's no longer recognized.

I don't have such precise tools to allow me to perform a reliable control and I don't know which external components are connected to the pins to avoid short circuit, but I want to try. As soon as I can get those measurements I let you know, thank you again!

Yes, both have dmesg command. Just to know, the dmesg command is used to write the kernel messages in Linux and other Unix-like operating systems to standard output.

Hi fzabkar, I've been able to do the measurements: [PIN] [Volt]
10 0,50V, 12 5,04V, 13 4,83V, 16 0,51V, 24 4,83V, 27 0,52V, 33 3,34V, 34 5,05V, 37 0,52V, 38 0,52V, 39 0,52V, 40 2,62V, , 41 3,70V.
I also made the first measurements: Vcore 0,69V, +5V 5,04V, Vio 3,41V

I don't understand why the Reset pin is high when the Vcore is low. I also don't understand why your Vcore measurement of 0.69V differs from the VDD12 voltages (~ 0.5V). :?

Which location are you using as your 0V reference?

Does it refer to mass? (GND?) If so, I'm using the usb jack carcass.

I measured again at the same time Vcore and VDD12 and it's the same (in this case 0,68V). :/

(The measurements will definitely not be very accurate, because I have adjusted two pins to the tester's tips...because I do not have thin tips :( )

If the voltage across C317 (Vcore) is 0.69V rather than 1.2V, then ISTM that the bridge must be faulty, despite the high level on the Reset pin. ISTM that a PCB swap plus firmware transfer would be worth a try.

Before trying to change the PCB and exchange bios, I would like to try your solution:

So (I think) to confirm the problem to the bridge.
