I have a WD30EZRS out of a WD mybook live network enclosure that a friend has asked me to take a look at.
When in the enclosure there was no sign of life and the red light showed on the front of it. When the drive was removed and connected to a power source the drive would make 3 faint clicks. I found someone else that had the same problem and isolating the connection to the read heads gave exactly the same result, with the drive spinning up correctly in the same manner.

My question is, where to take it from here. I've read that WD have a much more limited serial interface, so diagnostic logs would be a lot harder to obtain compared to any Seagate drive I've dealt with previously. Is there anything I can do that would help identify if it was a head issue/short or a pcb issue? I know that I could try and swap the controller board and see if that works, but that is honestly a gamble and might or might not work. I figured it might not hurt to ask in so that i can get a little direction, even if it is "go see a data recovery pro", which I will happily tell him if it is the best option, but if there is something I can do to even make it hobble along long enough to recover the data, that would make my day so much better.

Thanks for reading, any input greatly appreciated.

If you isolated the head contacts, and the drive spun, then your way should be the same of the guy in that post.

The heads need substitution, so then you better send it to a data recovery specialist ( not a common computer repair shop )

Great, I will let him know. Also as a rough guide, how much would that approximately set him back if things don't get complicated? ? I just want to be able to give him a ballpark figure so he can weigh up if the data is worth it.

Hard for me to say .
You will need to see with somebody nearer you, or wait for the other members.
