Is this HDD defective?

May 15th, 2017, 19:32

I recently purchased a Seagate 7200 RPM 3TB hard drive that I've been having issues with. Namely, it makes some ungodly racket when I turn my computer on. However, after it spins down, as can be seen in the video, the drive seems to function normally and makes barely any noise at all. I checked it over with Disk Utility and SeaTools and wasn't able to uncover any issues.

My computer is a Mac Pro 3,1 with Yosemite and Windows 7 running on two separate drives. It also has 3 other (Western Digital) drives in it that I haven't had any issues with at all.

What could be wrong with this drive? Is this expected behavior or should I return it for a refund?

You do have current backups of your OS and Data partitions on external media? I only mention this because a restore is much easier than, if the HD was to be replaced, having to reinstall, rebuild, reconfigure everything.
