What's the best freeware software for repairing hard drives that would otherwise be permanently broken?

If someone told you that hdregenerator could repair hard drives ...... they lied to you.

Never use this program against a disk with physical damage.

Almost never solve the problem but you can make some great paperweights ......

I've used it and have had some good results. I'm not asking for a comprehensive solution. I just want to know if it's a choice between throwing a hard drive in the trash or hooking it up to a software hoping that it gets fixed, what software should I try to use?

These threads might be worth a look:

You might also like to read various "selfscan" and "burn-in" threads by dilworks and Spildit at the HDD Oracle forum.
