Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

The hdd is a Quantum AT Fireball Plus AS (Atlantis 20) QMP6000AS-A with a revision gtla:AS60A011. Capacity is 60GB. The hdd can't be read from anymore and PC BIOS detects a failed and unknown hdd needing the F1 key to be pressed to boot the system. The hdd shows up under Victoria 3.52 but again only identifies itself(resets and delivers back PASSPORT information) and can't read still. Also shows SMART disabled and Security not supported. Using a terminal connection I recorded the power on start up information(attached in qntm.log file) recording an error 00A5.
Can this be fixed and how difficult and expensive? Any programs available that could do this quickly. I don't have too much on later Quantum drives. Also if repaired will it be reliable again.

I'm not a data recovery professional, but AIUI the 60GB model should have 6 heads (as per the product manual).
http://www.seagate.com/staticfiles/maxtor/en_us/documentation/data_sheets/fireball_plus_as_datasheet.pdfhttp://www.seagate.com/staticfiles/maxtor/en_us/documentation/manuals/Fireball_Plus_AS_Product_Manual.pdfAssuming that your drive was indeed configured with 6 heads, then it appears that one head has failed.
IIUC, the firmware appears to undergo a process of head discovery during "recalStep 0005" of the POST.
- Code:
RECAL
recalStep 0000
recalStep 0001
recalStep 0002
recalStep 0003
recalStep 0004
recalStep 000E
recalStep 0009
recalStep 0005 B2 --> physical head #0
recalStep 0005 D9 --> physical head #1
recalStep 0005 --> bad or missing head #2 ?
recalStep 0005 9B --> physical head #3
recalStep 0005 CD --> physical head #4
recalStep 0005 9B --> physical head #5
recalStep 0007
HdMap 3B --> 11 1011
Of course I could be completely wrong.
The only other difference that stands out to me is this additional line associated with logical head 0x01.
threeBurstPreScaleVar=FFFFFF8C
Maybe this is a red herring ???

Perhaps the OP could try to read the firmware modules to confirm whether the drive does indeed have 6 logical/physical heads rather than 5.

Here is a similar thread:
Quantum Fireball Plus AS 60GB:
viewtopic.php?t=28367&p=196774"The third symbol of the serial number [of Quantum Plus AS] shows the quantity of installed and being used heads":
http://hddguru.com/articles/2006.02.17- ... k-Q-and-A/The OP's log shows ...
SN 196026523518
Therefore ISTM that the OP's drive really does have 6 heads.

Thank you for your responses. I assumed that when I mentioned the two discrepancies of SMART disabled and SECURITY not supported that the model#,capacity,revision,etc. showed up correctly which is what happened.
Spildit mentioned the most important and that the drive will not likely to be ever be used again and if so will never be reliable. I'm half a world away from Portugal so I'll have to replace the drive with some other sufficient capacity IDE drive and reload all the files onto it. That will be tedious enough.
Again, thank you fro all your responses.

Amirbir(CDRLabs data recovery) I'm still half a world away same as with SpilDit.

The drive has defective H2.
These drives are pretty difficult for head swaps.
very few dr firms will be able to help you with that drive, most of them are just swapping heads, without knowing what the main problem actually is. I have a reliable method to deal with these (and the similar Quaxtors), so if you need, i can help. Still a lightyear away from you probably...
