I may be introducing a red herring, but Samsung's "RRO1x" (repeatable runout?) data look very similar in nature to WD's adaptives. That is, the data occur in pairs, and the values can be positive or negative.

I think that your drive WD5000BMVW-11S5XS0 - FireBird is a downsized 1TB HDD with two heads deactivated. The normal Firebirds are WD10JMVW-11S5XS0 with 4 heads. You have to figure out the head map of your drive and just then to try reading of SA.

This PCB (from a Hubble_LT) has the same MCU and motor controller. FWIW, U7 is unpopulated. The adaptive section is similar to that of the WD1001X06X-00SJVT0. Perhaps there is a clue here?

Just a curious observation ...

The most recent patent on the OP's drive (manufactured in 2013) was assigned on 11 Sep 2001:

Did WD cease printing their patent numbers on their labels after this day, perhaps as a mark of respect?

I'm reasonably certain that U7 is a barometric pressure sensor. It appears to consist of a Wheatstone bridge with 4 piezoresistive elements.

It IS possible to recover data without native ROM.
No idea why people say something is impossible... that's a very strong and rude word to use here.
Why don't they say 'we don't know...' ?

Nevertheless the adaptives are important and w/o them drive won't read anything. They can be restored but it's a grueling process. There is no way to do it with PC3K.
