Samsung ST1000LM024 head change strange case

July 14th, 2017, 9:00

Hello,

I have a Seagate/Samsung drive ST1000LM024 that had an issue with its heads after it felt down.

When I changed heads with an exact drive, the drive doesn't spin at all (it stuck on BSY).

When I put Donor PCB on the Patient drive (after heads were changed), drive spin well without clicks but doesn't reach readiness (of course because it has donor ROM).

So I thought it was an issue with patient PCB too, so I transferred Patient ROM on Donor PCB and put it on the Patient drive. Now drive doesn't spin at all (it stuck on BSY)

Please, any advice or help, I'll be thankful.

Kind regards

Patient heads and donor heads have different preamplifier. For pacient PCB the donor heads preamplifier is incompatible.

Thank you for your quick reply.

Why drive spin smoothly when I put Donor PCB (with Donor ROM)? the drive is not recognised because it has Donor ROM but it spin without clicks.

When I transfer patient ROM to Donor PCB, drive stop spinning at all.

Show us the terminal output.

    donor heads + patient PCB/ROM + patient MOVLY001 -> no spin -> incompatible preamp & ROM
donor heads + donor PCB/ROM + patient MOVLY001 -> spin, not ready -> incompatible ROM & MC (or MC damage?)
donor heads + donor PCB + patient ROM + patient MOVLY001 -> no spin -> incompatible preamp & ROM

EXACT.

In the 3 cases, it doesn't show anything in Terminal (even for the second case :( )

I suspect that the interface voltage is 1.8V LVTTL and that your TTL adapter is a 3.3V type.

If so, then you could try this Kindle mod:

What's the PCB number of both patient & donor?

Please, I'm a Computer, not an Electronic guy. Should I solder or unsolder a chip from the PCB?

For the PCB number, it's the same Seagate PCB number for both HDDs: 100720903 04

The drive in topic must be Samsung M8 not Seagate. And the PCB # must ends with REV.03, 06 or 07.

@ Everyone ,
Has Someone Tried If Adapting The Native Rom + SA Modules To Donor Rom + SA Modules Lets Us Work With Different Preamp Heads ,Well Worth The Experiment .

The Following Are The Preamps i Have Come Across

1 : T5563
2 : L2957
3 : T5565
4 : L2958

Here is an -03 PCB:

The serial TTL Tx/Rx test points are clearly defined. Measure the voltages at the two large round pads at the top left corner.
