Seagate ST3500412AS advice needed

July 24th, 2017, 3:33

My stepbrother messed up his wifes external hard drive, by using the wrong AC adapter.
This was her backup with years of photography, as her laptop was stolen she needed the data.

The drive did not spin anymore.
To make matters worse, he replaced the circuit board with a completely wrong one that happend to fit.
And threw out the original board.

They have been argueing about this for months, so when i heard this i offered to see what can be done.

The drive is a: Seagate ST3500412AS p/n 9TN142-510 firmware CC32 datecode 10246 site code SU
I have ordered a donor drive from ebay:

Seagate ST3500412AS p/n 9TN142-301 firmware CC32 datecode 10362 site code TK

I know that the original problem was probably just a diode, and that losing the rom data is a big problem.

But any suggestions on what i can try, and what not to try are very welcome.

Thanks :)

Well, since you have already ordered another drive, you can try the board, but I don´t think it will work.

If you do not have the original board anymore ( would it be the usb board, or the hdd pcb ? Maybe your brother confused them. You would need to check through TTL if the serial is different from the serial in the hdd label.

If they really need the files, the disk will probably need to be sent to someone specialized. There are some in the forum that may be nearer you that could give it a try.

Hello,

If they got rid of the bad board there are not too many options.
So far i know only one guy out there capable of recovering ROM for these...

Waste of time with non-native ROM.

is CDR capable of recovering from the lost ROM scenario?
