Hi guys

I have a Fujitsu hdd that has come to me in a very bad shape: opened, no front sticker at all and clicking. Of course , some data has to be recovered from him.The big problem is that I don't know what hdd is exactly.
Here are some photos of the hdd:

Now, what I did:
The hdd is clicking softly for some time that it gives RDY but every command returns ABRT.
I have copied the ROM in the programmer , but it looks too empty for me ( maybe I'm wrong).

The data inside the ROM is in BigEndian (if I'm not mistaken) but it still looks too empty.
From the PCB number it look like an MHV2160BT hdd but I'm not really sure.The problem is that I have to buy an identical one to exchange heads so I need to know exactly what model of fujitsu is.

What do you think?
Can anyone give me a hint?

A little detail: it's a 12mm height case and a 4200rpm motor (is really quiet).
Also , does anyone have a backup ROM from a MHV2xxxBT to try to compare with what I have?

i found similar pcb on MHV and MHW drives.
I had MHX2300BT a couple of years ago but the drive is not here anymore and i have not backed up rom
This was probably 12mm high, as yours.

No, it is probably OK. The dump i have from similar drive is mostly empty as well.

Google suggests that the 88i6735A-BAN1 MCU was used in the CA26343-B82104BA and B84204BA PCBs. Yours is the former.

Google also suggests that the CA26343-B82104BA PCB was used in the MHV2200BT and MHV2160BT models (4200 RPM).

The 5400 RPM models (MHW2120BH/MHW2100BH/MHW2080BH/MHW2060BH/MHW2040BH) appear to be associated with the CA26343-B84204BA PCB.

The part number on the spindle motor (CA06596-3762) appears to be associated with the MHV2200BT and MHV2160BT models.

CA06820 appears to be a BH part number.

ISTM that your drive is either an MHV2200BT or MHV2160BT.

Google searches suggest that MHX2300BT is associated with the CA26343-B84304BA PCB and a p/n of CA06846.

edit: it seems it does not mean anything, MHV2160BT has similar number (0604) in 13D...
This was quite different in the rom dump i have for MHV2120BH but i have no SA dump for that rom dump so...
I also saw some MHT2160BT on ebay where it is clearly a 9mm high drive:

however specs say 0.49" in most places, so it seems to be quite obscure.

When I first saw this drive I was also thinking is a MHX model. But, after searching on Google, I saw that MHX is using another PCB version number.So this is not a MHX probably.

After intensive searching on Google I have come to the same conclusion, that could be a MHV2xxxBT drive, but I still need a backup ROM from someone to compare with mine.

Also, regarding ROM structure. From Acelab Fujitsu manual, at offset 20h , first 4 bytes should be Firmware version and the next 4 bytes should be (firmware)Version date. It looks like the manual is a bit outdated because in this ROM they look to be inverted.

So, I still need a ROM backup to make an idea about what model to try/buy.

FWIW (maybe nothing?), the ~0105FI.rpm file in the MHX2300BT resource dump contains the text string "0041000BC024". This appears to correlate with the ROM header as follows:

Can you try to make a dump/copy the ROM from your drive just to compare with what I have?

The 0105 module (FI) has Factory Infomation info so I think it is OK to find the same info from ROM in it.

After comparing the 2 ROM's it looks like this:

Yes, they contains some code and 4 little modules for start-up.
Also, it looks like Fujitsu has changed the offset location for Firmware version, Firmware date, etc in ROM header compared to old models.

So, the MHX ROM has 0041000B firmware version and mine has 0000004f firmware version. Looking here

it looks like my hdd is indeed a MHV2160BT drive.

So I think that we have enough info to conclude that the drive in a MHV2160BT.

btw, have you checked if heads are dirty or what's inside?

Yes
That was the first thing I've done when it come to me as it was already opened by the client.
It looks ok inside, no dust and the heads are clean.
