you find a list of common baud speeds. then you try them. you wont hurt anything by wrong speed.

not specifically hard disks, but anything you connect to a serial terminal is pretty easy to find, normally one of 4 common ones. Some devices start with one speed, then part way into the boot, switch to a different one. It isn't common.

As masterclass implied, the more you play around with it, the easier it is to find out what you need.

good luck

try 38400. is it a Samsung MCU?

are you connecting the ground wire as well?

you might try this tool to discover baudrate:
https://code.google.com/archive/p/baudrate/
it is a python script

show a photo of your setup.

usually you would try the common ones in order

try 1: 19200
try 2: 38400
try 3: 57600
try 4: 115200

then switch RX TX and try again. usually one of the middle 2 though. Otherwise maybe the adapter isn't right. some are finicky with TTL adapters. you should have at least 2 with different chipsets just in case. I have had problems with ones that have a PL2303 chip. But better with ones that have CP2102 or CP2103

if you think that just banging away until you get it is non-professional, this quote is from the Atola insight forensic tool manual:
Quote:
Should there be no output in the Terminal window or should it consist of random symbols, try to change the Baud rate until you get a good response.

How are you powering the HDD? ISTM that your PSU and the USB-TTL adapter may not be sharing a common ground, in which case you may need to connect the adapter's ground wire to your HDD.
