Would the following combination work?

donor (SATA) PCB + patient adaptives + donor loader

Otherwise, could it be that the patient's ROM code really needs to find 128MB of RAM? Or could it be that the MCU can communicate directly with the bridge via additional pins and, if so, could it be that the patient's ROM is checking for the presence of the bridge???

Thx Brian.

I have a couple of ideas but nothing for sure.
As Franc said it might be checking the presence of the bridge. Or there might be some config resistor mismatch.
you could check state sector and see if it gives some clue as well.
Or use donor fw and write patient specific rom modules to flash.

that's all for now.

I wonder where these pins go. Perhaps they go to the 12-pin connector, or maybe they connect to the MCU.

Hi,
The PCB model in SATA Spyglass is the same as in the Pebble (2060-800022-000 REV P2)
The only difference is the amount of DRAM !!!

DRAM size (allocated)................... : 131072 (95581) kB -> Spyglass
DRAM size (allocated)................... : 65536 (55665) kB -> Pebble

PCB from Pebble in Spyglass is NOT working
PCB from Spyglass in Pebble is working OK

Yeah, a ROM from a 4 TB Spyglass won't work on a Pebble Beach, even though the PCB numbers are identical.

As a random aside, Spyglass uses a shingled data topology, whereas Pebble Beach does not.

Case closed (customer canceled service).

BUT... I found a 4TB SATA drive on eBay and it worked for the next 4TB USB we got in with firmware corruption.

This working SATA board PCB number is "2060-800022-001 rev p1."

One more donor drive still availabel on eBay, if anyone wants to prepare for the future:

I can confirm with jono-ats that the reason for the non-spin up and BSY, despite the match on the MCU and motor controller, is because of the subtle difference the PCB revision relating to Pebble Beach vs SpyGlass.

I have been working on a failed 4TB which uses the 2060-800041-003 REV P1. I was able to obtain a 3TB SATA which used 2060-800022-000 REV P2. This SATA PCB was no good despite having an identical match on the MCU and motor controller. As per the original post the drive would not spin and enter BSY.

Shortly after receiving the first 3TB USB disk I had another failed 3TB USB disk in. This time using 2060-800041-000 REV P1. Almost identical PCB layout to the -003 REV P1. One obvious difference, the -003 uses an Asmedia USB processor and the -000 uses a JM USB processor. Inspection of the ROM content of each showed the same in size, and content looking very similar. The donor SATA PCB worked normally for this revision.

Looks like a 4TB SATA disk shall be required too!

John

Did you compare the SDRAM (as per Mikippp's post)?

ISTM that the p/n on the PCB would reflect the artwork rather than the componentry. For example, I believe that the Asmedia and JMicron bridges are pin compatible, which means that they would function identically if installed on either PCB version. Instead I would think that the (variable) component configuration would be reflected in the stickered information.

I can confirm that the donor Pebble Beach PCB is using the following:

DRAM size (allocated)................... : 65536 (55664) kB

Due to the fault on the SpyGlass 4TB Usb PCB it has not been possible to access the SA fully to confirm the DRAM allocation.

Why can't you just read the part number off the chip and ask Mr Google?

depending on this post, if you solder the patient USB ROM on the SATA 800022 PCB, the drive stuck on BSY and doesn't work.

Was this done on good working drives for testing? Or failed drives?
Sometimes, there are issues interpreting what is going on correctly due to unexpected problems or compatibility.

I already posted this answer months ago on my forum, but to anyone trying to find a SATA PCB for Spyglass, you need PCB: 2060-800022-002

I happen to have one of these drives available for sale on Ebay if anyone is interested: https://www.ebay.com/itm/WD40NPZZ-00PDP ... 3905884149

Spyglass SATA drives do exist, but they are only sold in Japan at the moment it seems. I had to hunt a couple down and import them here to the USA.
